The Day of Silence is a day of silent prott for Gay, Lbian, Bisexual, and Transgenr equal rights and treatment schools. It has been actn annually sce 1996 when stunts at the Universy of Wt Virgia cid to take actn to their own creative hands. Now, 450,000 stunts om krgarten to llege spend their day silence together. This hardly mak holdg this program at the Universy of Rho Island an origal ncept. However, for a school who has never observed such a day before and a school wh a lack of GLBT volvement, this day uld be monumental. As a mp wh over 100 stunt clubs and anizatns, this day has the potential to be huge. Wh so many stunts already actively volved, pecially the social rights sphere, holdg a Day of Silence at URI uld be the perfect tool for creatg change for GLBT rights our muny and beyond. If you are a gay, lbian, bisexual, or transgenr stunt at any age, odds are that you live your life a certa gree of silence and opprsn. Though fort levels of inty exprsn span a wi variety of maniftatns, statistics do not lie. The Gay, Lbian, Straight Edutn Network (GLSEN) nducted a Natnal School Climate Survey 2003 which found some astonishg rults. The report showed that 4 out of 5 GLBT stunts reported verbal, sexual, or physil harassment at school and more than 30% of GLBT stunts admted missg at least a day of school the past month out of fear for their personal safety. This threat do not need to e the form of beatgs or ath threats, though that has been known to happen more than once. Name-llg, harassment, and bullyg on the basis of an assumed sexual inty all ntribute to a stunt’s lack of fort beg themselv. The Day of Silence n te classmat on the damagg effects of GLBT harassment and mand a more nondiscrimatory tnal environment. College should be a safe and clive environment for all, and though URI is not a hateful mp, some rapid and massive change needs to happen. Planng and executg a Day of Silence event at URI is no small task for a sgle stunt unassociated wh a Stunt Senate regnized anizatn.
