Gay was born the dghter of William and Mary Stevens Gay on March 18, 1829, Jon County, Geia. Stevens owned property around the state, cludg DeKalb County, and when he died 1850 Gay moved (wh her mother and sister) to a hoe on Marshall Street Detur, Geia.

Gay also published a book of poetry (1858), which she republished after the war to raise money to help support her mother and sister. Gay raised thoands of dollars Texas to pay for a fence and gate at the newly tablished McGavock Conferate Cemetery 1866 Frankl, Tennsee. In 1997 Gay was named a Geia Woman of Achievement.
