I lived Connecticut at the time and had jt turned four years old. I remember walkg outsi and fdg that the sun had set durg our time the theater. Whether was <em><a href=">The Ltle Mermaid</a></em> or the moviegog experience self, I’m really not sure, but one thg was for certa: I wanted to be a prcs jt like Ariel. I wanted two sea-creature bt iends, a fork my hair, a suave prce—the whole thg. The bt part was I was too young and naive to know that most people would ll a fat girl foolish for even thkg she uld dream of those thgs.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p>Now I’m an adult who—thanks to my lovely niec—has been subjected to watchg <em>Frozen</em> and <em>Moana</em> enough tim that they’ve been drilled to my head permanently. This has allowed me to appreciate the patience exhibed by every adult my life when <em>The Ltle Mermaid</em> was released on VHS. (For the rerd, <em>Frozen</em> and <em>Moana</em> are inic.) When I was a kid, the VHS release of your favore movie was an event, pecially if was a Disney movie and me one of those puffy s that felt almost as if you were holdg a storybook. She was c and gross and funny and fat and even a ltle b sexy—even if you didn’t want to adm .</p><p>I uld wre pag about power dynamics and privilege between both fat women and gay men, but for the sake of this say, I’ll jt say that fat women and gay men have often found mon ground and bond over beg le breakers. Fat women don’t play by society’s le that a woman’s body exists solely for male gratifitn, and gay men subvert the genr rol that men have tradnally relied on for the purpose of keepg women and people of lor out of power. As I said, there’s so much more nuance to nsir, but the pot is: OF COURSE URSULA WAS INSPIRED BY A DRAG QUEEN. Of urse she challenged me and ma me unfortable. Only then will her vengeance be fully realized. Essentially, the fat woman mt bee somethg she is not orr to prove that she was worthy all along. Not Ursula, though.
