Wa—have had a soberg effect on this sort of triumphalism. The general tone of femist rhetoric has grown distctly tougher and more cynil. Cheerful slogans about the femalens of the future have reced; the word “patriarchy,” formerly the prerve of women’s-studi profsors, has entered the mon culture. Last year, an article about women’s exod om their jobs durg the panmic, Ros rented her prev this and apologized for s “tragic naïveté.” “It’s now pafully obv that the mass entry of women to the workforce was rigged om the begng,” she wrote. “Amerin work culture has always nspired to keep profsnal women out and workg-class women shackled.”</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p class="paywall">Men, pecially nservative men, ntue to wrg their hands over the male ndn, of urse. But femist patience for “twilight of the penis” stori has n out. “All that time they spend snivellg about how hard is to be a poor persecuted man nowadays is jt a way of adroly shirkg their rponsibily to make themselv a ltle ls the pure products of patriarchy,” Ple Harmange wrote her 2020 screed, “I Hate Men.” More recently, the Brish journalist Lrie Penny, her “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Sexual Revolutn</a>” (Bloomsbury), not the systemic unrpngs of such snivels: “The assumptn that ooz om every open pore of straight patriarchal culture is that women are expected to tolerate pa, fear and tratn—but male pa, by ntrast, is tolerable.” Penny is reful to distguish hatred of masculy om hatred of men, but she nohels f the fundamental polil stggle of our time as a ntt between femism and whe heterosexual male supremacy. In “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Daddy Issu</a>” (Verso), Kathere Angel lls for #MeToo-era femists to turn their attentn to long-overlooked paternal lquenci. If the patriarchy is to be feated, she argu, women’s reluctance to cricize their male parents mt be terrogated and overe. Even the “morn, civilized father” mt be “kept on the hook,” she remends, and dghters mt reckon wh their “sire for retributn, revenge and punishment.”</p><p class="paywall">The bative tone taken by the wrers is hardly a surprise. One might argue that a movement currently scramblg to fend some vtige of women’s reproductive rights n be fiven for not beg pecially solico of men’s sperm unts. One might argue that isn’t femism’s <em>job</em> to worry about how men are dog—any more than ’s the job of hens to et about the ndn of fox. But two recent books claim otherwise. “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">A History of Masculy: From Patriarchy to Genr Jtice</a>” (Allen Lane), by the French historian Ivan Jablonka, and “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">What Do Men Want?: Masculy and Its Disntents</a>” (Allen Lane), by Na Power, a Brish lumnist wh a background philosophy, both ntend that the drift toward zero-sum war-of-the-sex language is a bad thg for femism. Although their diagnos of the problem are almost diametrilly opposed, both thors make the se for a more genero and humane femist disurse, pable of regnizg the sufferg of men as well as of women. Hens, they acknowledge, have legimate e for rentment, but fox have feelgs, too.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Jablonka’s nse, ply rearched book, which beme a surprise bt-seller France when was published there, 2019, tak an amb, key-to-all-mythologi approach to s subject. Jablonka, who is a profsor at the Universé Sorbonne Paris Nord, begs the Upper Paleolhic, examg s myster, rpulent “Ven” figur, and mov suavely across the lennia all the way to the succsive wav of morn femism. He has an eye for strikg, often grim, tails—unr the Babylonian Co of Hammurabi, a dghter might be killed as punishment for a murr mted by her father—and relish drawg parallels across eras. From ancient tim to the prent day, seems, the central totems of masculy—weapons, lootive vehicl, and meat (particularly rare meat)—have remaed remarkably nsistent. Likewise, om the fall of Rome to the Weimar Republic, men have nsistently attributed polil disaster and cultural cle to the rptg fluence of feme valu.</p><p class="paywall">Jablonka’s this about how patriarchy arose is a fairly standard one. Paleolhic societi already had a sexual divisn of labor—Spanish ve patgs om as early as 10,000 B.C. show male archers huntg and women gatherg honey—but was relatively benign. In the Neolhic era, wh the advent of agriculture and the move away om nomadic existence, birth rat creased and women beme nfed to the domtic sphere, while men started to own land. From then on, each new velopment, be metal weapons, the rise of the state, or even the birth of wrg, further entrenched the power of men and the subjugatn of women.</p><p class="paywall">Until now, that is. “Patriarchy has cled,” acrdg to Jablonka, but men rema ught “pathologi of the mascule,” tryg to live up to a symbolic role that don’t reflect their rced domance. The rult is an “almost tragic” level of alienatn, he wr, and femists, stead of mockg or dismissg male anguish—thereby leavg men vulnerable to the revanchist fantasi of Tucker Carlson and his ilk—should regnize this moment as a ccial recment opportuny. Now is the time to nvce men that their “obligatory mol of virily” has immiserated them far more than has empowered them. “The masculy of domatn pays, but at a high st: an secure ego, puerile vany, distert readg and the life of the md, atrophied ner life, the narrowg of social opportuni . . . and to top all, a dimished life expectancy.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Femism has been slow to empathize and llaborate wh men, Jablonka claims, bee too many the movement rema wedd to a “Manichean world view” of male opprsors and female victims. Some femists are unrenstcted leftist typ, who reject any evince of women’s progrs as “mystifitn signed to hi the persistence of male domatn.” Others are duped by a “pro-women romanticism” to believg that women are nately nicer and more progrsive than men. Jablonka rejects this sort of sentialist thkg, which he says provis a spur blogil ratnale for tradnal genr rol. If women are naturally kr and more nurturg than men, and if men are “trsilly imbued wh a culture of rape,” why bother tryg to change the stat quo? Ttosterone and other androgens may “have somethg to do wh” a male propensy for aggrsn, he nces, but “human begs are hostage neher to their blogy nor their genr.” Men’s history of btish behavr is the product of patriarchal culture, and only by sistg on “the fundamental inty” between men and women n femism realize s proper aim—a “redistributn of genr,” which “new masculi” abound and the selectn of Not that Jablonka thks there is only one, eternal mascule style; rather, all mols of masculy sce antiquy have been mechanisms for assertg and imposg patriarchal power. One of his more bizarre—and ahistoril—claims is that the mascule hegemony has emed four mascule typ ferr: “the Jew,” “the loser,” “the Black,” and “the homosexual.” It is, of urse, impossible to expla the historil opprsn of poor people, Black people, gays, and Jews entirely terms of genr polics, and, tryg to do so, Jablonka has to make any number of ludicro assertns, cludg that whe men enslaved Black men part bee they nsired them “feme” and “non-virile.” The book’s cky bid for prehensivens prov to be s undog.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">In keepg wh his anti-sentialist view of the sex, Jablonka matas that women are, ep down, no ls pable of greed and racism and warlike behavr than men, but this view is somewhat at odds wh his central ntentn—that a world whout patriarchal masculy would be an fely more jt and peaceable place. In an apparent attempt to square this ntradictn, he exprs the vague hope that powerful women of the future will avoid some of the worst practic of powerful men of the past, and that genr jtice might be “translated to the prciple of an equaly of posns, rcg equali between the var soc-enomic stat.”</p><p class="paywall">Acrdg to Na Power’s “What Do Men Want?,” such attentn to qutns of class equaly is a typil weakns of morn genr polics. Her short but slightly meanrg work of cultural cricism tak aim at several strands of ntemporary femist doctre and lays out, wh varyg gre of herence, how she thks a “graceful playfulns” between men and women might be rtored. Power fds terms like “the patriarchy” and “male privilege” nebulo, and believ they obscure more than they reveal when applied to poor and workg-class men. Liberal femism, she argu, has proved all too patible wh the terts of rporate palism, precisely bee is more terted how people “intify” than who owns the means of productn.</p><p class="paywall">Power’s ma tert, however, is not persuadg femism to be more tersectnal s crique of men. “I creasgly thk that we need to thk ls terms of stctur,” she wr, “and much more terms of mutual rpect.” She believ that exaggerated plats about the toxicy of men—their mansplag and <a href=">manspreadg</a> and so forth—have bee a kd of tribal hab among women. In addn to elimatg much of the pleasure and charm of everyday male-female teractns, the nstant monizg of men has led to lose sight of what is valuable and generative male and female difference. Where Jablonka wants to help men pe the “obligatory mol of virily” that has given them a bad name, Power asks to nsir what might be worth retag om that mol. In our haste to clare masculy a rndant artifact, she says, we have lost sight of some of s “posive dimensns”—“the protective father, the rponsible man.” Although we’re often told that morn societi have outgrown the need for male mcle and aggrsn, we still rely on men to do the ln’s share of physilly arduo and dangero jobs, cludg the fightg of wars. (Even Jablonka’s genr-fluid future, he acknowledg, men will do the heavy, dirty, “thankls” work. To sist on a leral-md genr pary would be “absurd,” he says.) If we still expect men to do the dirty work, Power asks, shouldn’t some value be attached to male strength? Women heterosexual relatnships, she claims, rpect a gree of rponsibly channelled aggrsn their partners. “However tough you feel, however pennt you might be, when down to , you would like a man to be able to stand up for you, physilly at least,” she wr. “Vlence is not as far away om re as we might like to image.”</p><p class="paywall">Power’s book, beg of the “pendulum’s swung too far” variety, is rather too quick to clare all the meangful equali already won, all the necsary reforms of male manners acplished. “Male behavr has shifted radilly,” she wr. “What man would today flirt wh a female -worker?”—which is the kd of facet remark that only a person who has mistaken her <em>bien-pensant</em> bubble for the world uld make. Neverthels, the “graceful playfulns” that she hop n be prerved between the sex, and even some of the more benign aspects of old-school masculy, are probably more wily shared than is generally acknowledged. Jablonka argu rather unnvcgly that women read romantic fictn bee sweetens the pill of their subordatn and helps them accept the “evabily of mascule power.” But romantic fictn isn’t produced by the Commissn for the Contuatn of the Patriarchy. It sells bee speaks to a persistent female attractn to the benignly domant male.
