REVIEW: NATNAL PORTRA GALLERY SALUT GAY INS

The first portra exhibn to celebrate the ntributn of gay people and gay ins to history and culture. An important photography exhibn, Gay Ins, at the Natnal Portra Gallery (2 July – 18 October 2009) will celebrate the ntributn of gay people – and the signifince of the gay in – to history and culture. Not only do this exhibn clu many well-known ins, who may or may not be gay themselv, also reveals some surpris and will enurage a wi dience to thk about faiar fac new ways.

The Gay Ins shown the exhibn will clu those people, livg or ad, whatever their sexual orientatn or terts, who the ten dividual selectors regard as spiratnal, or as a personal in. Gay Ins brgs together portras of those people who are regard as pecially signifint to each of the selectors, alongsi those of the selectors themselv, all proment gay figur ntemporary culture and society.

The ncept quickly evolved to clu vatns to ten gay people – each distguished different fields – to act as selectors. This also seemed appropriate bee wh this same perd homosexualy was gradually accepted and ma legimate Bra. The chosen ins, who may or may not be gay themselv, have all been important to each selector, havg fluenced their gay sensibili or ntributed to makg them who they are today. This exhibn brgs together ten selectors, chaired by Sandi Toksvig, each of whom is a proment gay figure ntemporary culture and society.

"She nced that she was reprentg a gay muny that did not exist, the same way a straight muny did not exist. It might make people feel better about themselv and might make other people rethk their perceptns of gay life.

"The are people who gay people thought were really spiratnal? The novelist Alan Hollghurst has chosen two wildly different men: Andy Warhol's sex symbol Joe Dallandro, who starred as a htler Pl Morrissey's trilogy Flh, Trash, and Heat; and the Victorian poet Gerard Manley Hopks, an tense and pafully reprsed Catholic who wrote some of the century's most homoerotic poems. Nelson Manla was chosen by Kg on the grounds that he is everybody's in, gay or straight.
