Pl, Rami Malek is brilliant as Freddie Mercury; abandong the jected meanor that won him an Emmy for <em>Mr. Robot</em> for somethg much more alive. (The other, <em>The Favoure</em>, also stars Olivia Colman and Emma Stone queer rol.)</p><p>The movi are mostly fantastic — and for what ’s worth, many of the straight actors who portray the queer characters are credible as well. But I n’t help but wonr what the dtry would look like if actual queer actors were given the same opportuni to ont the films as their straight peers. Many openly queer actors aren’t afford the opportuny to play tradnally “straight” rol <em>bee</em> of their queerns, so would figure they should at least play characters whose lived experienc mirror their own. In addn to an herently better unrstandg of what means to be LGBTQ+ (and the more nuanced performanc that would rult), queer people would also be more likely to feel protective about how their narrativ are prented to the world. Where <em>Bohemian Rhapsody</em> uld have prented a great opportuny for s lead actor to brg awarens to LGBTQ+ issu, stead nearly led to the <a href=">erasure</a> of s protagonist’s sexualy.</p><p>At the very least, would mean a lot to queer dienc to have actual LGBTQ+ people to rally behd when ’s time to support the films. Right now, we are expected to celebrate the fact that queer narrativ are fally makg to the big screen at all, but we want queer actors on our screens, too. Though Sam Smh was <a href=">wrong</a> 2016 when he claimed to be the first openly gay man to w an Osr, Sir Ian McKellen's <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">rrectn</a> that there has never been an openly gay <em>actor</em> to w the prtig award was right. And that’s troublg, nsirg how many actors have won for playg LGBTQ+ characters. Queer artists serve the chance to tell their own stori ( all aspects). That’s why when <a href=">Lena Wahe</a> won an Emmy for the <em>Master of None</em> episo she wrote about a Black lbian g out to her parents, felt more impactful than if had e om someone who hadn’t lived that specific experience.</p><p>The ultimate goal isn’t to prevent straight actors om playg queer characters — pecially when they n imbue their character wh as much life and raw energy as Rami Malek did for Freddie Mercury. But when the playg field is as unlevel as seems to be right now, I jt want to know: <em>Will we ever get a big queer movie wh a queer lead actor to rally behd?</em></p><p> </p><p><em><strong>Get the
