Given the timidatn factor, which has only recently broken down (see next post), the reer and urage of Al Panama Brown (1902-1951) are nothg short of epic. Corpas says that as boys Brown and his iends often fought the streets of Colón, Panama. Brown’s father’s ath was a turng pot. Brown began to wear his father’s hat, and the skny kid a floppy p was often ridiculed. Brown punished his tractors wh his fists. He was good at , and when he went to a boxg gym he was quickly intified as a risg star. He traed the gym that had been ed by the Panamanian star Kid Norfolk and other fighters idolized by Brown. His fay was extremely poor, and  perhaps the key to his early boxg succs is one of Brown’s mottos, which Corpas translat as, “If you n fight, you get sh; if  you n’t,  you get bashed” (p. 26). Brown was also good at track, but he preferred boxg bee paid sh; track stars, he said, were paid medals (p. 27).</p><p>By 1922 Brown was on his way up the boxg ladr and on his way to New York, a boxg Mec. After workg rtrants, he found his way to Gpp’s Gym. He weighed 114 pounds, but his reach amazed everybody: “A flyweight wh the height and reach of Jack Dempsey,” they said (p. 45). Soon he was Panama Al Brown, highly regard both boxg circl and also the Harlem bar scene (p. 55). Bantamweights and others who box the lighter weight class tend to be ls well-known now than the heavyweights. Today, for example, Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua are talked about more than the highly succsful (and unfeated) super lightweight Ryan Garcia. Yet the current list of the most popular weight class do not clu heavyweight. He was a remarkable athlete. Tall for his weight class, 5’11”, Brown had a reach of 76”. We n pare him to featherweight Orlando Cz, 5’4” wh a reach of 65”. Wh the height of the average middleweight, Brown boxed at bantamweight, where the average height today is 5’5”. He was the first Lat Amerin world champn, wh an amazg rerd of 163 fights and 129 victori. He ranks among the greatt of all bantamweight boxers and was ducted to the Internatnal Boxg Hall of Fame 1992.</p><p><strong>Cabaret and ntroversy</strong></p><p>Brown’s life outsi the rg was notor. Compared to his history, the behavr of today’s famoly bad-boy boxers—Mike Tyson, for example—pal. Alholic, dg-addicted, and syphilic, Brown was also a baret sger and dancer. A flamboyant drser, he was ually seen at the center of a group of admirers and hangers-on very much like himself. Durg and after his peak (1929-30) he fought on an average of once per month or more. He fought eight tim 1929, 16 tim 1930, 13 tim 1931, 17 tim 1932, and 11 tim 1933. Thereafter he dropped down to seven or eight fights yearly (1934-37, none 1936) and then down to two or three (1938-42). He often boxed Europe. In 1926 three of his 13 fights were France; 1927 he only fought France. Not by cince, his baret reer was centered Paris.</p><p>Prejudice agast Brown is glarg. In September 1928 Brown won the Natnal Boxg Associatn bantamweight tle. Jt a month later he was stripped of the tle by the NBA print, whout explanatn. It was not “bee of his lor,” Corpas wr (p. 96). He was regnized as the “leal” bantamweight tleholr, meang that he took the tle om the undisputed champn that weight class and beme the undisputed champn (this was before there were multiple tl a sgle weight class). In October 1930 Brown won the Internatnal Boxg Unn tle as bantamweight, featg Eugène Ht.</p><p>Corpas intifi 1932 as the year of Brown’s cle. However, Brown had almost 20 years to live. In January 1932 Brown was hospalized wh syphilis; penicill was not yet ed as a cure for this disease. He beme addicted to pakillers (p. 143). Yet he rumed boxg mid-March 1932 and then fought another 16 tim that year, wh 15 of those match takg place outsi the Uned Stat. Health problems, cludg looseng teeth, arthris, and other ailments, did not slow his antic pace.</p><p>Brown’s nadir might have been his November 1932 fight wh Ee Pladner, which Brown began when he was high on amphetam; he often fought when he was high on dgs or alhol. The fight end when Brown knocked out Pladner, by mistake sat down Pladner’s rner, and then, makg his way to his own rner, fated when jt as the unt agast Pladner reached ten (p. 155). Two weeks after this bafflg performance, Brown fought Sheffield, England (Dec. 1) and then Bssels (Dec. 3); five days later he fought Paris.</p><p>Brown was nstantly goad by his manager, Dave Lumiansky, who was a former surance broker turned boxg mogul; he seems to have robbed the rels and distracted Brown at every turn. By 1928 Lumiansky had “sole posssn of the rights to Brown” (p. 89). As Lumiansky found out, Brown was difficult to handle. He had to track down the boxer the gay bars and sex clubs of Paris, as Corpas not wh obv disgt (p. 158). He phed Brown to fight three tim a week, threateng to bankpt the creasgly sick and exhsted boxer.</p><p><strong>Famo iends</strong></p><p>Brown’s flamboyance and boxg prows were assets his Paris life. He shared an apartment wh Jean Cocte, the French poet and a lear of the surrealist movement. Cocte met Brown 1938, when the boxer was dancg and sgg a Paris nightclub. The boxer remd Cocte of a “younger versn” of himself (he was born 1889 and was 12 years olr than Brown). The men shared a birthday and shirt and shoe siz (p. 204).</p><div class="ptned-image-ntaer"><figure><a class="image-lk image2" target="_blank" href=" data-ponent-name="Image2ToDOM" rel="nofollow ugc noopener"><div class="image2-set"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" /><img src=" width="265" height="190" data-attrs="{"src":"" class="sizg-normal" alt srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" loadg="lazy" /></picture><div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>In March 1936 Brown lost to the Spanish boxer Baltasar Sangchili, who then, a rematch later that year, took the Internatnal Boxg Unn bantamweight tle om Brown. In 1938 Brown regaed the tle. He was victor, but Brown nohels had to be rried back to his drsg room on a stretcher (p. 211). After the rematch, however, Brown was aga IBU bantamweight champn and the boxg world uld see that, however unlikely seemed, Brown was back.</p><p>Corpas not that Cocte’s tert Brown was fancial as well as sexual. Cocte bet heavily on the boxer at rgsi, where their munitn durg fights was often observed. Brown would signal to Cocte when he was ready to end a fight. Cocte would then place bet wh rgsi booki and llected his earngs when the fight end on Brown’s schle (pp. 208-9). Cocte wasted ltle time movg on to other lovers when his tert Brown waned.</p><p>Cocte saw Brown as prsed and lost and seems to have felt that Brown uld only be Brown if he boxed. Although the poet knew nothg about boxg, he enuraged Brown and oversaw Brown’s eback, some sense managg him. In 1936, when he need medil treatment to whdraw om dgs, Brown received fancial assistance om Cocte’s close iend, Co Chanel, who today is universally regnized as one of the most important figur the history of fashn. She nsired Brown one of the few “honorable” people Cocte knew (p. 206).</p><p>Corpas’s book  helps rever Brown’s reer and, along wh , the liv of the men Brown fought the U.S., France, Algeria, and elsewhere. Brown began boxg after World War I; he lived France the years before World War II. Both wars and their impact on his and other reers form part of the book, a gift to rears lookg for ntexts for boxg and boxers om the past. To his cred, Corpas clud an x of nam as well as the boxer’s fight history, a urty very rare boxg books.</span></p><p><span>Panama Al Brown was a man who ma the most of all the talents he had been given. For my money, that’s a hallmark of the mascule man. That he had many talents was his blsg and, not surprisgly, his curse. His life was short by any standard but also too long for a man whose lack of disciple was, even by boxer standards, extreme. His succs as a boxer was extraordary. His llapse was no ls remarkable. Acrdg to Corpas, Brown was found eezg near Tim Square 1951. He was taken to a police statn and then to Bellevue Hospal. Some iends later moved him to a hospal on Staten Island, where he died a few days later of advanced tuberculosis. He was buried Long Island Cy, his body then exhumed and returned to Panama, where he is buried a natnal cemetery. </span><em>Alfonso Teofilo Brown, Gloria natnal l boxeo</em><span> are the words on his tombstone (p. 228).
