When I first me to Sheffield, was apparent that there was not a vibrant gay scene, certaly not one which rivaled London or Manchter.
Matt Taylor, the project manager for the new Gay Quarter told RMC media that the planned velopment will make Sheffield ‘more appealg to LGBT visors’ suggtg that ‘this n only be good for our cy. A sna named ‘Fraterny’, a pub, an eatery and a shop, as advertised on the Gay Quarter webse, are currently unr nstctn, set to open later 2018.
However, sce March, qutns were raised as to the clivy of the new space, many noticg the particularly mascule nnotatns of the sna’s name and tagle: ‘Sna experience for gay and bisexual men. ’ It was soon apparent that the new gay quarter uld potentially exclu those who do not intify as such. From surg lol ter foms, I disvered that Sheffield has had a history of unsuccsful gay venu.

Typilly, they have a very loyal but niche ctomer base; often cis-genred, gay men. In London, ‘Heaven’, one of the untry’s most popular gay venu has had s door staff cricised for transphobia and homophobia, which is strange sce ’s a gay venue. Up until the late 2000’s, nightlife was an sential means for gay men to meet potential partners and build a supportive muny tim of severe prejudice.
However, due to the creased populary of gay datg apps, social media, and a general movement towards acceptance of homosexualy society, has bee easier for gay men to form relatnships whout havg to lve to the night to do so. That is not to say gay clubbg is ls popular after all, where else are you gog to hear Madonna, Pla Abdul or Mariah Carey on a night out?
One fom er implied that the reason a gay quarter has not succeed the past is that there simply isn’t a need for one; most clubs are safe, clive spac which uld be partly down to Sheffield’s large left-wg stunt populatn. The webse boasts a Tardis mural and a ‘Dalek’ DJ Booth; neher of which screams ‘trendy gay nightlife’ to me.
