LE GAY PARIS
* gay paris in french *
I'm lookg for the old Parisian exprsn Le Gay Paris. I fd worth notice that the people at TVTrop have given Gay Paree as the tle of their article on mon media trop about France. Y, "Gay Paree" is a well-known "English" phrase, predatg by s the sexual meang of "gay.
I rather thought that "Gay Paree" njured imag of the Moul Rouge Touloe Ltrec's time, or wild surrealist parti the time of Anaïs N. It is also Paris’s most well-known gay neighborhood. The ma gay areas of the neighborhood are ncentrated along and around Rue Sate-Croix--la-Bretonnerie.
But jt bee the Marais wasn’t the place to be gay Paris, don’t mean a gay neighborhood didn’t exist. Paris first beme a gay pal the 1920s wh s first “goln age” of gay life. Its stat as a gay haven was (and is) rivaled only by Berl on the European ntent.
LE MARAIS: "GAY PARIS" AND THE CONSTCTN OF AN LGBTQIA+ MEC
Many notable queer artists and wrers (such as Colette, Satie, and Gert Ste) champned the cy as a gay paradise, particularly for gay women. This first gay neighborhoods were centered on La Butte Montmartre and Pigalle.
After the war, Paris’s -vogue gay neighborhood shifted for the first time to Sat-Germa-s-Prés (on the Left Bank of the See). This lotn was nsired by some to be Paris’s first gay neighborhood, sce s existence was the first to be “known to Parisians. After spendg two s near l’Opéra, Paris’s first gay bar, Le Village, opened on Rue du Platre 1977 jt south of the Marais.
Regardls of the reason, gay bs and life began to flourish jt a few blocks northeast Marais proper afterwards. It’s important to note that was gay bs (notably thanks to entreprenr David Girard) that created the Marais-As-Queer-Capal, and not the migratn of queer people’s livg quarters. Not that many gay people live the Marais.
