‘GAY WT’ – A BOOK ON LGBT HISTORY BRISTOL AND BATH 1970 TO 2010

We are the longt nng group the South Wt of England for gay men, lbians, bisexuals and transgenr people, providg a safe and supportive social group Bath, Bristol and surroundg areas. About - Gay Wt. Gay Wt is a social and support group verg Bristol, Bath and the surroundg area.

It n trace s origs back to April 1970 when the Bristol group of the Campaign for Homosexual Equaly (CHE Bristol) was found. The other foundg anisatn was Bath Gay Awarens Group (BGAG), which was set up tumn 1971. The groups held regular meetgs of their members, ved outsi speakers and wrote to MPs and Councillors to try to get them to support chang the law to remove some of the anomali left by the 1967 Sexual Offenc Act, which partially crimalised male homosexualy.

In 1982, CHE rtctured self and the Bath Group renamed s self to GAYWEST, aimg to bee a more social group but still volved polil activism.

LOS ANGEL GAY SNAS

Early the followg year, CHE Bristol merged wh GayWt, which sce has vered the area of the old County of Avon (Bristol, Bath and surroundg areas). GayWt gave support and a sense of rpect at a time when Gay people felt unr attack om vic headl the tabloid prs over the HIV/AIDS epimic and the ernments sectn 28, which tried to prevent lol thori om takg posive measur towards LGBT people Edutn and other facili. As more attractive mercial venu and social and sports anisatns terg for LGBT people appeared lolly, the need for GayWt dimished and the number of members gradually fell.

BATH GAY BARS

Membership stabilised around 90s the early 2000’s and sce then GayWt has ntued to thrive. In 2020, GayWt reached s fifth . GayWt will ntue to provi a space for LGBT people to make iends, socialise and maybe fd lastg partners.

GayWts most popular event is “The Rabow Café” open every Saturday Bath om 10.

This book analys the velopment of the lol movement, focg on the history of Gay Wt, a social and support group which, together wh s precsors, the Campaign for Homosexual Equaly Bristol Group and Bath Gay Awarens Group, is one of the longt-lastg LGBT anisatns the untry.
