If you were to tell me 10 years ago that I would be stg a ffee shop Boise, Idaho, wrg an article about my experience as a gay athlete I’m not sure I would have believed you.
The built-up anxiety wh me revolvg around the fact that I was gay was alone enough to keep me quiet. In that chapter of my life I was out as a gay person to my fay, iends and peers.

Homophobia ran rampant through my adolcent and young-adult stag of life. I knew I was gay early my life, around 8 or 9, but didn’t tly unrstand what meant. It wasn’t until the fourth gra that I started to realize that much of society was not acceptg of the typ of feelgs and was when I first experienced homophobia.
There was another stunt my class who shoved me to the hallway floor while aggrsively yellg the word “homo” at me.
It was more bee of his aggrsn towards me than the actual word “homo. I told my teacher what happened and asked her what “homo” meant. The word “homo” stuck wh me all throughout gra school as if were wrten on my forehead.

To this day, I’m not sure if he is aware of the impact that he had on my life as a young gay nner. He knew that I was gay. My journey at Boise State Universy as a gay athlete started off sour.
The three guys started an extremely homophobic and misogynistic nversatn about past teammat. Each chimed wh credibly gradg ments about their former teammat or even former iends who happened to be gay.
One of the guys proudly claimed that he abandoned a close iend after he me out as gay. I am assumg that at the time they did not know I was gay.

One of the guys turned to me and said, “Wa, you’re not gay are you? There was no way that I uld have e here knowg how the lears of the team felt about gay people. My teammat, peers, ach and universy have all been credibly supportive of who I am as a gay athlete.
