Gay attend grammar school as soon as he was old enough, but his parents had both died by 1695, and an uncle took him until 1702. In 1708, however, Gay met Alexanr Pope, the greatt poet of his day, and began publishg. Soon he was a member of a famo clique of satirists, the "Mart Scribles Club, " prisg not only Gay and Pope, but Jonathan Swift and Dr.
