In the words of the prison warn the movie "Cool Hand Le": "What we've got here is failure to munite!”</p><p class="">Let’s start wh the choice of the play, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nt." Based on Ken Key’s novel of the same name, the show als wh difficult and plex issu of power, sany, dividualism and rebelln. I thk is important that teen actors have the chance to explore and perform plex and challengg material. And as we see creasg censorship of stunt productns schools that fear any ntroversy, arts anizatns like Boston Children’s Theatre provi an important out-of-school place for young actors to stretch themselv.</p><p class="">That said … there is no nudy lled for the script. The nakedns was add durg rehearsals. That addn changed the spe of what had been agreed upon when the board, staff, teen actors and their fai signed off on dog the play. That moment of change should have been acknowledged, discsed, explaed and examed. Even though the parents of the teen actors agreed to let their kids participate a scene wh a nu male actor, the fact that this me the midst of rehearsals certaly put a different ame around the discsn. In this circumstance, if any of the parents had objected, would have meant pullg their kid out the middle of rehearsals. To say nothg of how to manage dience expectatns of the choice to be the first children’s theater to brg nudy onstage.</p><p class="">Boston Children’s Theatre was found 1951, which mak an stutn wh a long history and strong inty. Can the anizatn change? Absolutely! But when stutnal change is ma to happen whout aquate discsn, unrstandg and buy-, then chaos and disagreement will be a likely oute.</p><p class="">So what about nudy onstage theater? How do happen and how is managed?</p><p class="">Often is the playwright who dictat that nudy be a part of the productn of a play. Peter Shaffer required that certa scen be performed nu his play, "Equ." In 2008 playwright Douglas Carter Beane was <a href=">upset to learn</a> that a Chigo productn of his play "The Ltle Dog Lghed" substuted the required nudy wh actors unrwear.</p><p class="">Sometim nudy is add by the director. Wrer Noel Coward certaly did not clu nudy his 1939 play, "Prent Lghter." Yet director Stt Ellt clud nu scen the 1996 Broadway revival. When Ian McKellen went Full Monty while playg Kg Lear 2007, Germae Greer wrote, “The most memorable moment, for many of the only memorable moment, Trevor Nunn's latt productn of 'Kg Lear' is when Ian McKellen drops his troers and displays his imprsive genalia to the dience.”</p><p class="">Actors’ Equy Associatn is the unn for stage actors Ameri. They have very strict l and requirements for theater pani prentg actors the nu. First and foremost: If a role requir that an actor be nu, that requirement mt be stated clearly the dn notice. Equy wants actors to know whether they are agreeg to be naked even before they go to read for the part. That is a wise le.</p><p class="">While the Boston Children’s Theatre productn of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nt" was not vered by Actors’ Equy Associatn, image how differently the procs might have gone if everyone participatg onstage, backstage, the dience and the boardroom had known up ont that there would be a naked adult male on stage. It’s a shame that the need discsns did not take place a timely and lm manner. As was, everyone was rpondg while the productn was procs, time was nng down and munitn was prsured.</p><p class="">Should Boston Children’s Theatre be able to clu nudy their stage productns? Sure. Do I thk that’s a wise choice for a children’s theater to make? I do not. To ll your anizatn a children’s theater is a mment to meet the needs, terts and age-appropriatens of a very specific and unr-served dience.
