Recent scholarship suggts that the gay/lbian idyllisatn of ral plac is an urban nstct, nstuted through metropolan sensibili, muni and imagari. We extend this work through examg the nstctn of Daylford, Victoria, as a ‘gay/lbian ral idyll’. Daylford annually hosts ChillOut, Atralia’s largt ral gay/lbian ftival, which unrps s idyllisatn. Utilisg data drawn om fieldwork nducted at the 2006 ftival and mentari circulated the gay/lbian media, we argue that not only is Daylford idyllised the Atralian gay/lbian imagary, but that raly and urbany are hybridised s amg as a ‘gay/lbian ral idyll’. This is manifted several ways: discursively, as the ‘gay pal of untry Victoria’; spatially, through enablg proximy to Melbourne; materially, as a stic settg for upmarket stor/servic typilly associated wh the smopolan ner-cy. We th show how the ‘gay/lbian ral idyll’ is an urban nstct not only the gay/lbian imagary, but also when spatialised a ral place.

Atralian Bure of Statistics’ (ABS) cens data has revealed that LGBTI people, who ed to monly pack together for safety and muny ner cy enclav, are on the passg of same-sex marriage laws and an creasg acceptance of gay people has spurred the migratn.
EARLY LBIAN & GAY DAYLFORD
Acrdg to the ABS, Daylford has now jumped to the top flight of gayt plac Atralia, acrdg to the number of same-sex upl unted the 2016 NSW, the Blue Mountas, Coffs Harbour, Broken Hill and Lismore also have healthy LGBTI Bure timated there are now some 46, 800 same-sex upl livg together Atralia, up 39 per cent on the prev cens. Sce the ABS first started measurg same-sex upl 1996, the number has the ABS don’t ask people to fe their sexualy, the numbers of gay people total will be far higher.
Proportnally, the ACT has the hight equency of gay upl while South Atralia and Wtern Atralia have the will e as ltle surprise that the ner Sydney suburb of Darlghurst, home of the Mardi Gras, is the gayt place Atralia wh almost one--five upl of the same-sex fact, all 10 of the Atralian suburbs most preferred by gay men, plac like Kgs Cross and Newtown, make a ntuo strip surroundg the cy’s CBD. An arc which has been dubbed the “rabow ribbon” or even the “Great Gay Wall of Sydney”.
“Female same-sex upl tend to be more geographilly dispersed and ls ncentrated than male same-sex upl, ” acrdg to the of the reason why gay women are more dispersed than men is put down to havg the space to have kids. You n see when you walk down the street that you’re not the only gay the village, ” she Tkler put Daylford’s populary down to several factors cludg a welg straight muny and that the town has long been a tourist mag. “Gay people are a pretty sophistited bunch, they like good ffee and food and then there’s the betiful environment that draws people , ” she town’s relative proximy to Melbourne also means people n pop to the cy easily.

Needls to say, those rg-s didn’t last long, ” Ms Tkler creasg diaspora of gay people do create issu, however. SydneyThe New South Wal pal has long been regnised as one of the top statns the world for LGBTQI travellers, and around Mardi Gras time, you’ll feel like the whole cy has turned gay. We probably don’t need to tell you that much of the party actn Sydney occurs around Oxford Street Darlghurst and Kg Street Newtown, or that the most popular gay cy beach are at North Bondi and Tamarama.
For a lbian-iendly bar Sydney try the Sly Fox Enmore on a Wednday favoure gay gut hoe Sydney is Governors on Fzroy Surry Hills, a place that feels a b like stayg at your super-posh uncle’s hoe – but book ahead bee this place is popular (if you haven’t already booked for Mardi Gras – good luck). MelbourneOften lled Atralia’s cultural pal, Melbourne draws much more fluence om Europe s archecture, fashn and food – and for the gay traveller may feel like a more chilled out and refed experience after the glz of Sydney.

Better still, do an art tour of Melbourne – check out the Centre for Contemporary Photography Fzroy, vis the NGV and ACMI at Feratn square, and take a drk overlookg the Yarra at gay scene Melbourne is basilly divid between the north si and south si of the cy. Photograph: /flickrDaylfordJt unr two hours north of Melbourne, the Swiss-Italian found town of Daylford (often affectnately known as Gaylford) is an oasis of crystal-clear sprgs, betiful lak, massage and healg retreats, and a surprisgly smopolan ma street wh Melbourne-qualy ffee.
Daylford is popular at this time of year, so book early and check you and your squeeze at one of the gay-iendly gutho such as Laki at Daylford or the Green Door and spend a rejuvenatg weekend havg a long bnch at Breakfast and Beer fe, pesg the book and antique stor, walkg and swimmg at the lak, dulgg yourself wh a massage or tantric healg ssn, or visg one of Daylford’s many galleri such as the betifully renovated Convent Gallery. Photograph: /flickrTasmaniaTasmania has e a long way sce beme the last Atralian state to pass gay law reform 1997. Today boasts a small but visible gay scene Hobart and Lncton, and offers many good optns for gay travellers.
Hobart even has s own LGBTQI dance bar at Flamgos, but tth one wouldn’t travel to Tasmania to vis gay night clubs. My advice is to spend the night Hobart at the charmg gay-owned Corda’s Cottag takg the f and galleri around the betiful sandstone buildgs at Salaman Place, then hire a vehicle and h the road. Tasmania also now has more acknowledgement of s same sex history tourism rmatn cludg early gay explorers, nvict love and “psdo-mal”.
