The best apps for gay dating, gay sex and gay romance

So your gay ass is looking for love. Or sex. Love or sex. Maybe both. Probably not neither, if you’re here, because you’ve come to an article about the best gay dating apps.

Gay dating apps are a scourge. They’re also a necessity. Guess what: that’s all technology. Homosexuality does not make you worse, or better, than the conveniences of modern society. The thing is, they do differ from the standard offerings, even when you are on the standard offerings: the clandestine nature of gay love and a decade of Grindr mean even in the most mundane of places we find a way to switch it up. It’s a wilderness out there and it can be terrifying if not demeaning.

We’re also dealing with a time where a community, built on nightlife and safe spaces, is having to stick around at home: it might be that gay dating apps are now your predominant way of engaging with the community. The stakes are higher, the needs different. It’s never been a weirder time to be trying to figure out gay dating apps, especially now Grindr is becoming a place for conversations with men you may not get to touch for months.

Take it from a sodomite who knows: I’ve dated my way across multiple continents, I’ve topped, I’ve bottomed, I’ve got into inadvisable threesomes, I’ve navigated saying no to the HnH crowd, I’ve lost ones that should have been LTRs and I’ve had LTRs with people I should avoid. I have met some of the most amazing men in my life on apps, and also some of the worst. That being said, some of the biggest dirtbags I’ve ever let into my bed were people I met in cafés and bars (and also some of the best men in the world). Nowhere is safe, nowhere is perfect, nowhere is all bad. No one is going to just show up on your doorstep: if you want monogamy, or polyamory, you’re going to have to work for it.

No one is going to just show up on your doorstep: if you want monogamy, or polyamory, you’re going to have to work for it

But depending on what you’re looking for, and where you are in the whole rigmarole, will change your experience. So here is a guide to the best dating apps out there for love, lust and everything in between.

11 best lgbtq+ dating apps no matter what you’re looking for

One thing both straight and LGBTQ+ folks can agree on: Dating is a struggle, no matter what method you choose. You could courageously strike up a conversation with a stranger at your neighborhood bar or you could ask a friend to set you up with one of their friends—but if you’re like most people, you probably turn to the online dating apps. That’s particularly true if you’re a member of the LGBTQ+ community, who, according to a Pew Research Center survey, are twice as likely as straight adults to have used a dating site or app.

As a result, many mainstream dating apps have taken steps to become more inclusive, and, even better, new LGBTQ+ dating apps are constantly turning up. So to help you meet your match, we’ve rounded up some of the best LGBTQ+ dating apps you can download right now. Some cater to certain segments of the LGBTQ+ acronym, like Grindr (which primarily targets men) or Lex (which is basically for anyone but straight and/or a cisgender men), while others are for the queer community as a whole. Some are great choices if you’re looking for a long-term relationship, and others are ideal for something a little less serious.

The bottom line? These LGBTQ+ dating app options all serve different needs. So if one doesn’t work, in the words of the immortal Aaliyah, dust yourself off and try again.

Scruff might have a reputation solely as a hook-up app, but not so, according to its CEO Eric Silverberg. “Members all over the world have met their partners and husbands on SCRUFF, and we’re delighted by the stories of love shared with us over the years.” One key feature that differentiates Scruff, an app that caters to gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals, from its competitors is „Scruff Match“: single guys looking for dates are only shown other single guys open to dating or relationships. One of the biggest ways to stand out from the competitors on an app like Scruff? A clear picture of your face—which will undoubtedly stand out against a sea of torsos and blurry shots. Scruff is free, but you can try Scruff Pro for $19.99/month, which offers unlimited search, filters, and the ability to sort your grid of perspective matches.

Grindr is often regarded for its contributions to hook-up culture since it allows you to instantly meet up with people that can be as close as feet away. But make no mistake, Grindr can be a place for love. The app is is particularly good if you’re of the “see now, buy now” persuasion in that it presents LGBTQ+ in closest proximity to where you are, making the opportunity to take the conversation from online to IRL both easier and faster. It also has the biggest name recognition within the space. It’s that popularity that makes the user pool particularly wide, and as a result, diverse. The app is particularly targeted toward men, and offers both a free version and an “XTRA” (with free trial) starting at $19.99.

Originally founded in 2011 as a “better version of Grindr,” according to the company, Hornet has since become the world’s largest gay app with 30 million users worldwide, including the US, Brazil, Turkey, and Russia. “Our mission is to create a digital home where queer men feel they belong and are supported—and also where they can possibly find Mr. Right,” says Hornet CEO Christof Wittig. In addition to the app, which caters specifically to the B, G, T, and Q letters of the acronym, Hornet also offers a “stories” section on its website with LGBTQ+ focused content, from tips on how to avoid injuring yourself when shaving down there to lists of the best local bathhouses. Really, Hornet is more of a social app than an explicit dating app, one meant to cultivate meaningful connections. This app is free, but like many of the others, offers a premium version starting at $9.99/month.

Jack’d self-identifies as “the most diverse digital queer space in the world.” According to CEO Eric Silverberg (who also oversees Scruff), the app is known as a place where users can be themselves and find connections without fear of the kind of racism and harassment that can be commonplace on such apps. Like Scruff, it caters to the GBTQ letters of the acronym. “We strive to make sure that Jack’d is a true safe space, where people can be both sexually and emotionally open, and because of this, Jack’d is one of the best places for QPOC to find dates and create new relationships.” To that end, early in its history, Jack’d focused on the queer community of color through its marketing, sponsorships, and social media, which is an effort that continues today, according to Silverberg. Jack’d is free and offers a Pro version for $9.99 per month.

HER is focused on „the unique behaviors and community interests of queer womxn,“ founder and CEO Robyn Exton, explains, saying that as a by queer/for queer app, the queer experience was the top consideration from conception. „We have 17 sexualities and 18 gender identities. You can assign more than one pronoun to your profile. We’ve created communities to connect you with other folks with the same identity, from Queer Womxn of Color to Trans Womxn to They/Them communities.“ Those gender identities include womxn, non-binary, gender fluid, pangender, agender, questioning, gender non-conforming, two-spirit and more. The app, which is the largest for LGBTQ women, is free, but also offers premium memberships, starting at $14.99 per month.

Hinge differs itself from the competition through personality-revealing prompts in an attempt to allow matches to get to know each other better. It’s also the app where Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg met his husband Chasten. The company’s ultimate goal? To eventually become irrelevant to potential users: “Based on user surveys and in-person focus groups, we’ve determined that many LGBTQ+ members have frustrations around dating apps as many are used to facilitate hookups, rather than forge lasting relationships,“ a spokesperson for the app says. „Hinge’s goal is to get all members off the app and out on a great date—and eventually, for members to delete the app for good.” Until then, you can download the app for free or pay to be a Preferred Member (subscriptions start at $19.99 for one month).

In 2017, Kelly Rakowski launched @personals, an enormously successful Instagram account that posted user-submitted, text-based personal ads (yes, like the ones found in the backs of newspapers and magazines) from queer, bisexual, transgender, gender-nonconforming and nonbinary people looking for love. From that, the free dating app Lex, which is short for Lexicon, was born. Like the old-school Instagram account, Lex encourages users to focus on the things people say, rather than what they look like („Text first, selfies second,“ according the company), which is why ads on Lex include a 34-character heading, a 300-character body, and the option to link to an Instagram account.

While JSwipe is a dating app that caters to the Jewish community, it was founded on a universalist mindset, according to creator David Yarus. “The beautiful thing about JSwipe is it’s meant to be used to help you find love, whatever that means and looks like to you,” he says. “We’ve been told by the LGBTQ+ Jewish community that we’re the only Jewish app/site that allows for bear-magazine.com we hope isn’t true!“ Plus, you don’t have to be Jewish to use the app—it’s open to anyone and everyone who celebrates Jewish culture. (You can identify as Just Jewish, Conservative, Orthodox, Reform, Traditional, Willing to Convert, or Other.) It’s free, but offers a paid, premium subscription, called First Class, for $17.99/month.

Feeld, which was founded in 2014, is a dating app open to all genders and sexual identities, aiming to create an inclusive space “where everyone can be honest with themselves while being responsible towards others.” The app offers its members more than 20 gender and sexual identity options to choose from, as well as the ability to pair profiles with a partner for polyamorous couples or couples looking to explore together. „This aims to normalize unconventional relationship structures and ethical non-monogamy,” says Lyubov Sachkova, the company’s communications lead. You can download the app for free or pay for a Majestic Membership ($11.99 per month), which offers additional features, like the ability to see who has already liked you.

“We are an app if you want a relationship,” Amanda Bradford, Founder and CEO of The League says. “A real one.” While other apps may be more vague in defining what to them a connection looks or feels like, The League is for those looking for love. And though the app is for everyone, “most of our users from the LGBTQ community are gay.” The League is unique in that it offers users a nightly “Happy Hour” in which they provide you with anywhere from 3-7 matches via the app’s algorithm. “We were curated for the professional in mind,” Bradford says. “Most of our users are extremely educated and profession driven. They want to meet their match—a partner who will complement them and walk side by side and support them in their careers.” There are a variety of membership types, from free to $99 (member) to $199 (owner) and all the way up to $999 (investor).

Sure, it’s not a conventional dating app by conception—but when we polled LGBTQ+ people to find out where they’ve had the most success in courting dates, dozens responded with Instagram. “I met my husband at an AA meeting and then searched Instagram for a man named Mike M and found him,” author Jackson Marano-Tilley told me. Some important caveats: Being that Instagram isn’t designed as a dating app, keep in mind that not everyone is single and/or looking, which is predominantly the case on a dating app. Still, this can be a great place to strike up a conversation and get a sense of how a potential date sees the bear-magazine.com literally. It usually begins by going down a wormhole, seeing a comment on a friend’s post that peaks your interest or seeing a photo of someone you know with someone else you find attractive. Many call the courtship, in this instance, “sliding into the DMs,” with DM meaning “direct messages.”

Best dating apps 2021: top apps to find love, whatever your orientation

Romance is just a swipe away with the best dating apps

Maybe now could be the perfect time to explore the best dating apps for Android and iOS? After all, while we’re not living in a post-pandemic world just yet, this side of 2021 life is less on pause than it has been for a while, so after a hiatus from putting yourself out there, maybe it’s time to dust off those profiles. After all, if you’re single and want to (don’t say mingle) – change that, or just want to meet new people, the most socially distanced way of doing so is probably using dating apps.

Even for anyone unsure about meeting people in person just yet, there’s no point waiting for Covid-19 to disappear before you start talking to people through messaging and video call, and besides, the dating app pool is richer than ever. Classic apps like Tinder now support FaceTime-style video calls for truly distanced dates. Some apps, including Hinge, now offer up vaccine status information on profiles, so you can match up with folks who share your views on health as well as love.

There are new players in the game, like Thursday, an app that, as the name suggests, only activates on a Thursday – it’s the new Friday, don’t you know? Once the clock strikes midnight and Thursday draws to a close, the ball is over, messages and likes get zapped. Then next Thursday, the dating game can start again with a clean slate.

There are also apps catering to a burgeoning demographic of daters, or groups that identify with a specific body type, culture, religion. Veggly, for example, is designed for the vegetarians and vegans of this world. Meanwhile, WooPlus’s tagline is ‘Meet Curvy Singles’ — body positivity? Yes please.

It’s important to add, we didn’t just look at the app stores to come up with this list. We also quizzed a wide range of dating app guinea pigs, from those who used them once and found a soulmate to those who use them regularly for everything from relationships to flings.

So whatever your preferences, and whatever you’re looking for, check out our selection of the best dating apps on offer right now in 2021. We’ll keep updating this list as new apps are released.

The trials and tribulations of dating as a gay american expat

I’ve always said that the best education possible is traveling the world. Experiencing new cultures, new people, new ways of life, and seeing things you never thought imaginable when back at home. I wasn’t wrong in thinking this, but I did realize that living abroad took this learning to an entirely different level. Vacationing is completely different than working, cooking, grocery shopping, going to the gym, and LIVING in a foreign land. It’s exciting because everything is different than it is back home. It is frightening at times. And dating, as an expat? Well, that’s an entirely different animal, especially for a gay man in his twenties in countries like the U.K., France, Australia, and Costa Rica.

I never looked at myself as exotic until I lived overseas. Somewhere along the lines, America became a power house in media and entertainment. So, no matter where you look or listen, there is influence from the United States everywhere. Our pop-stars are always playing, in English, on the radio. A song from a US artist is at least every 5th or so piece played in the clubs. American movies are what dominates the foreign box offices. To me, I was just a plain-Jane gal (guy) originally from the Midwest coming to a country near you via Los Angeles. But to foreigners, I was aberration: part of a complex machine from the biggest power house nation on the planet.

Sure, I have dirty blond hair and blue eyes. But at 5’7” (I might be stretching that a bit), these features just make me another boy-next-door type while in the states. Nothing special.  In Latin America and southern Europe, however, these genes, plus my American nationality, often help me feel like a very mini-superstar. I’m different looking than a lot of the population and opposites attract. And an expat living in their country meant that I was an exotic foreigner available like some kind of banned pet that garnered oohs and aahs at elementary school show-n-tells.

Not everyone abroad feels the same way. There is definitely deep-rooted cynicism from many foreigners about what the United States stands for and its role on the grand world scale. We are taught in America that we are the greatest country that has ever been. That the United States was the first of any nation to do a lot of things: invent the telephone, the television, first in flight, the internet, smart phones, the works. Some of these are true, while others aren’t totally, completely accurate.

Our presence in world conflicts doesn’t get lost to many foreigners. We Yankees are often considered by many peace-loving nations as the bullies of the world, inflicting our beliefs and principles on other nations at war, whether they liked it or not. This doesn’t always garner us the greatest of reputations, especially with ethnocentric leadership in office during the Bush Jr. and Trumpian era. I met a few foreigners—most of which were friends of friends or visiting from other countries—that just outwardly admitted a distaste for Americans. That’s a tough egg to crack.

But for someone like me, I try and always will be the epitome of what a good American is and should be: We are a great nation full of fabulous people. Most of us are trying to get through our days with as little headache and as many laughs as possible. When I lived abroad, it was imperative to me to not only be on my best behavior, but to persuade the foreign masses that Americans are the real deal. Not the best, not the worst. But some of us ARE some of the best people you’ll meet.

So, when it came to dating as an American expat, I was on a mission to have as authentic of an experience as possible. Grindr virtually took away that blissful moment of love at first sight, but I didn’t let that phase me. I learned quickly to take off the little Stars and Bars emoji from next to my half-naked front torso profile name and replace it with something more culturally apropos… like the bicep emoji…

Grindr, Scruff, and Europe’s Planet Romeo were all decent resources when trying to meet someone. Though these applications often destroy that initial spark you feel upon first laying eyes on a total hottie, they did help to weed through potential suiters from the duds or ones that just don’t match. Let’s face it: gay men are picky. Many of us already have fixated types in mind. On top of that, pun intended, lots more gay men have one specific desired position that they are often convinced they cannot stray from: top or bottom.

When I ended up dating in Australia and Europe, being versatile never felt like a problem. Maybe I am mistaken, but Europeans and their Aussie counterparts just seemed to be more open to the idea of sexuality and owning it. In the United States, in my humble opinion, I find a definitive line that many gay men are just not willing to cross. They are either bottom or nothing. And, tops won’t attempt bottoming. But in Europe and Down Under, sexuality just seems to be a lot more fluid. More fun, less drama.

That’s just the sexual positioning. Dating dating abroad as a gay expat has plenty of amazing quirks as well as some, at times, serious drawbacks. On the negative side, for starters: many of the guys I dated abroad assumed that anything we started could never be substantial because I would end up moving away.

This wasn’t necessarily always the case. I dated several guys in Sydney and England who were very non-committed for this reason: they thought I would eventually move back to America. What was really emotionally difficult was coming to the realization, in some instances, that they were correct. My mother always says: a fish and a bird can fall in love, but where will they make a home? A Brit and an American can fall in love, but eventually, someone has to leave their previous life behind to move to be with their bird. Or reconcile to live in both.

On the positive side, meanwhile, me being an expat for the most part didn’t really differ so much from dating an American in the States. I found certain nuances of dating people from other cultures to be quite charming. I would never go water skiing on a date in America. Or crabbing. “Meeting the parents” can be such an event in the United States, but in countries like Costa Rica and France, bringing you around to their family and friends was often a first-date experience. “Going out dancing” in the States means getting a few drinks then going to a club to dance. In other countries, going out dancing means going out all night long and into the morning hour: dinner, drinks, dancing, drinks, dinner, dancing, drinking, dancing, rinse, and repeat.

In the end, what really matters is the company you keep while abroad. I would make the assumption that dating is easier for someone who has permanently emigrated from the US, but in reality, dating is difficult for everyone.

I ended up moving back to the United States every time, each for different reasons, of course. There is a lot to think about when getting serious with someone while living abroad. But really, these are some of the same trials and tribulations in dating someone back “home”. If I had any advice to give, I would suggest that anyone wanting to date as an expat should be open to any and all possibilities that come your way. You could meet the man of your dreams or just simply learn a lot about other cultures, and yourself, along the way.

Dating gay

Gay dating is often thought to not be serious and imply no long-going intentions whatsoever. While for some men it can be true, for others such perspective only complicates the process of finding a partner which is not easy at all anyway. Gay dating sites and apps offer a chance to meet other gay guys, but will such relationship last? Not necessarily.

You might think that being gay you are doomed to either be a struggling lonely soul or a great flirt. We are absolutely sure: there is plenty fish in the sea for gay singles. Here at bear-magazine.com our aim is to help everyone in need of a soulmate and we believe that your chances multiply if you join or website!

Bowing to us pressure, chinese owner sells gay dating app grindr

NEW YORK — Beijing Kunlun Tech has agreed to sell gay dating app Grindr to comply with orders from the U.S. government, which deems Chinese ownership of the Los Angeles-based company a national security risk.

Kunlun’s board has approved the sale of Grindr for $608 million to an American investment holding firm, the company said in a Friday regulatory filing. The Shenzhen-listed company had poured $245 million into acquiring the Los Angeles-based company, for which it had plans for an initial public offering.

Hours after Kunlun’s announcement, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order mandating another Shenzhen-listed company, Beijing Shiji Information Technology, to divest all interests in StayNTouch, a Maryland-based software company providing management systems to hotels.

„There is credible evidence that leads me to believe that“ Shiji, through its purchase of StayNTouch, „might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States,“ Trump said in a Friday news release.

Chinese law requires companies to provide access, cooperation, or support for Beijing’s intelligence-gathering activities — a rule that has led the U.S. to distrust companies ranging from telecom equipment maker Huawei Technologies to viral video app TikTok.

Last year, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) ordered Kunlun to divest Grindr after determining its ownership of the dating platform, which contains sensitive personal data such as sexual orientation and users‘ HIV status, constitutes a national security risk.

The cross-agency government body is also investigating ByteDance’s 2017 acquisition of short video platform bear-magazine.com, which was later integrated into its TikTok brand.

Kevin Wolf, partner at Washington-based law firm Akin Gump and former assistant secretary of commerce in the Obama administration, expects more cases this year blocking Chinese deals involving tech companies that have a large reservoir of sensitive personal data, as new CFIUS rules broadening the scope of national security risks took effect earlier this year.

Concerns over such transactions are „not really unique to the Trump administration,“ Wolf said.

„CFIUS in my day had similar concerns regarding acquisitions of companies with large amounts of sensitive personal data,“ he said. „The only difference now is that standard is much more articulated as a statue as opposed to just a policy that CFIUS had in terms of analyzing national security implications.“

Access to U.S. citizens‘ personal data by a foreign adversary — a category China falls under — is seen by CFIUS as facilitating espionage, Wolf said.

Fears over Beijing’s possession of American citizens‘ data have also intensified recently after the U.S. found Chinese military personnel responsible for the hacking of credit agency Equifax, which in 2017 compromised personal data of almost 150 million Americans.

In the case of StayNTouch, the platform could provide Beijing access to a large swathe of travel information, which could be used to track U.S. government employees or compromise them.

Wolf said a similar case could also be reasonably made in TikTok’s case. The short video app was downloaded 738 million times in 2019 alone and is hugely popular among teenagers.

Apart from CFIUS scrutiny that could potentially force ByteDance to divest it, TikTok is also drawing heat from some on Capitol Hill.

Republican Sen. Josh Hawley on Wednesday said he will soon introduce legislation banning the app on all federal government devices.

Chinese ownership of TikTok is „a major security risk for the American people,“ Hawley said Wednesday. „This legislation is a necessary step to protect the security of the United States and the data security of every American.“

The best gay dating apps for youth in year 2021

For years, online dating was only possible for straight people. Some of the sites such as bear-magazine.com and eHarmony communities whose co-founder is notoriously homophobic had historically excluded the LGBTQ community (no LGBT dating apps at all).

Even as new applications have revolutionized the world of online dating, queer people discovered that these applications had little to offer in terms of inclusiveness, acceptance, and create space for people with a wide variety of sexualities. Well, thankfully now gay, queer, and lesbian dating apps are available.

Fortunately, times are changing and engineers are making applications only for the LGBTQ people group. These applications give a stage to everything from hookups to long-haul connections.

And keeping in mind that some applications keep on taking into account explicit gatherings inside the LGBTQ people group, most are advancing toward making comprehensive and strong stages for everybody. We’ve gathered together a couple of our top choices.

What is the best dating app in germany?

Compared to the mentioned German online dating sites above, dating apps take a lot less effort to sign up. There is no personality test and scientific matching algorithm. Dating apps tend to aim more for casual dating. However, that does not imply immediate one-night stands, as a survey from SimpleTexting uncovered.

Dating Apps have two significant advantages over dating sites. They are all available in English, so they are ideal for expats in Germany. And they all operate on a freemium business model. The primary functions with which you can start dating are free; however, all apps also offer premium features via in-app purchases.

Here are our top picks for the best dating app in Germany.

How to stay safe on hookup sites

If you’re new to the world of free hookup sites and apps, there are a few things to be aware of. When you use hookup sites, you’ll want to steer clear of fake profiles and potential catfish. In other words, if a profile seems a bit too good to be true, or is asking for super personal information, keep your guard up.

Here a few more tips to keep in mind when you use online dating sites:

Meet up in a public place when you meet someone for the first time

Are these sites good for finding friends with benefits?

The short answer is yes! While it’s true that many of the sites on this list were created with dating in mind, you can also find an FWB very easily. Any good dating site will ensure that its users can find exactly what they are looking for.

Now, no matter how great a hookup site may be, you still have to be clear about what you want. Many users skip over the user bio and opt for a very slim user profile. While it may be tempting to gloss over these details, I highly recommend that you do not. A great user bio not only makes you stand out but also helps you find exactly what you’re looking for. Other users can look at your profile and decide if you may be a good potential match.

When it comes to finding a friend with benefits, there’s no need to beat around the bush. Be clear that you’re only interested in a casual fling, and you’re more likely to match with a like-minded person. All that being said, the sites on this list tend to have very open-minded communities. If you’re worried you’ll be judged for your preferences, you can rest easy. There are many users on the sites above who are excited to explore no strings attached relationships.

Do you have to pay to use these hookup sites?

Now, when it comes to dating sites, there’s a huge range of potential prices. Some sites charge premium membership fees, while others are totally free. But in most cases, dating sites offer both a free basic membership and a paid option.

Free memberships typically allow you to browse the site and check out unique features such as live chat and user forums. Some sites also let you message other users with the basic membership. Premium memberships give you full access to all of the features of the site. That usually includes unlimited messages plus additional premium features.

All of the sites on this list either have a free membership option or a free trial option. We always recommend going with the free option first so you can see what a dating site has to offer.

Can you really find a hookup on an online dating site?

Believe it or not, it’s very possible to find a hookup on any of the dating sites listed. The vast majority of the users on these sites are just looking for a casual fling. You don’t have to be looking for your future spouse to enjoy the benefits of a dating site.

The most important thing is to be clear about what you’re looking for. Let other users know that you’re interested in a one-night stand or casual encounter. You’ll quickly find that there are plenty of other users seeking the same thing.

Now, if you’re looking for a quick hookup, it’s best to look for other users in your city. That way, if you do connect with someone, it’s super easy to meet up in person. As long as you remember the safety tips, you’re good to go.

Seeking is another great online dating site for finding a quick hookup. This site was created for people who are interested in finding a sugar daddy or sugar baby. Although this site is geared towards sugar dating, it’s actually perfect for finding a casual relationship or hookup.

Seeking has a very high ratio of women to men, which is a huge plus. As for the free membership, Seeking has a couple of options. For sugar daddies and sugar mommas, the basic membership will allow for up to 10 free messages, the ability to browse sugar babies and save your favorite accounts. Upgrading will get you unlimited messages, the ability to be featured, and a host of other premium features.

For sugar babies, the basic membership will only show your profile in a standard search. In order to access a basic membership, you will have to upload a profile picture that is verified by the Seeking team. If you decide to upgrade as a sugar baby, you’ll get unlimited communication, and several special features.

4. okcupid

OkCupid is an extremely popular dating website that has been making love matches since 2004. While most people think of this site as a platform for serious relationships, it’s also great for casual hookups. OkCupid really focuses on helping people find what they’re looking for, whether it’s serious, or no-strings-attached.

Now, if you’re looking for a free dating site, this is an excellent platform. Unlike other dating sites and apps that require you to upgrade to access most features, OkCupid allows you to do nearly everything for free.

Free users can send and receive messages, send likes and see potential matches. As you can see, OkCupid is fully functional with the free option. If you do decide to upgrade your account, you’ll also be able to boost your profile, get read receipts, send unlimited likes, and more.

5. nuit

Nuit is certainly one of the most unique dating sites available. While most dating sites use common interests to make matches, Nuit relies on the power of astrology. That’s right– users sign up for this casual dating app to find an astrological love match. And while this may seem geared towards romantic relationships, you can also use it to find a hookup.

When you use Nuit, the app will take a look at your birth chart, which is how the stars were aligned at your birth. This information is then used to find matches that are compatible in a number of ways. Nuit will look at compatibility for:

If your goal is to get laid or find a one-night stand, I suggest looking for a match who is compatible in the magnetism compartment. Now, if this whole idea seems a little kooky to you, you’re not entirely wrong. That said, the app is an incredibly fun and interesting way to meet a potential hookup.

The app has proven to be very popular amongst millennials and the LGBTQ+ community. Nuit is free to download in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

6. blendr

Blendr is one of the best dating apps for finding casual encounters. Just like Tinder, people turn to Blendr to find a quick, local hookup. The app utilizes location features to help users find a match in their city. So, whether you’re home or traveling, this is a good platform for finding a fast hookup.

The reason Blendr has been so successful at creating casual matches is its special feature set. One of the most popular features for finding a hookup is the “Encounters” feature. In this area of the app, you’ll only find people who are interested in something casual. This feature uses the popular swiping method that you’ll see on many dating apps.

Another great feature on Blendr is the “People Nearby” feature. This allows you to see which users are in your area, making it super easy to find a one-night stand. With the free version of Blendr, you can send messages, match with users, view profiles, and create your own user account.

7. luxy

Here’s an option for those of you who enjoy the finer things in life. To put it simply, Luxy is the best dating app for the rich and the beautiful. The users on this dating app are typically quite attractive and likey, very rich. The app has a very clean, and sleek interface which makes for an elevated user experience

You’ll find that many of the users are making a significant annual salary which is verified by the app. That said, you don’t have to be rolling in money to join this app. Only about half of the user base chooses to verify their income.

Now, due to the exclusive nature of this app, the user base is much smaller than what you’ll find on other dating apps. Luxy offers a free option for new users. This option lets you explore what the app has to offer, but your features are fairly limited.

It should come as no surprise that the users on this site are not afraid to spend some money to find a good match. The paid membership is no walk in the park at nearly $80 per month. That said, you can check out the app and see if it’s a good option for you, without paying a dime.

9. adam4adam

Adam4Adam is considered by many to be the best hookup app for gay men. This hookup app was made exclusively for the gay community and most of its users are looking for something strictly casual.

The site is fairly easy to navigate, but the website could use some updating. Adam4Adam is set up much like a social media app, so you can interact and get to know other users. The best part about Adam4Adam is that it’s free. You can access pretty much every feature without having to pay. That means you can sign up and enjoy the full range of features right away.

10. theleague

TheLeague is a highly regarded online dating app that is popular amongst young professionals. The app is fairly exclusive and often places potential members on a waitlist before approving their accounts. In order to get off the waitlist, it is recommended that potential members put some serious time and effort into their user profiles.

Now, the reason this hookup app takes its membership so seriously is to create a community of people who have similar goals and values. Members of TheLeague are typically career-driven and academically accomplished people. In fact, in order to even sign up at all, you’ll need a LinkedIn account.

If this sounds like your cup of tea, you can sign up for this dating app for free. TheLeague is available for both Android and Apple devices.

11. scruff

Scruff is another excellent option for singles in the LGBTQ community. This dating site has over 20 million users, making it easy to find a match in your city. Scruff was designed to help people find exactly what they’re looking for in the love department. So, if you’re in the market for a hookup or one-night stand, you’re in luck.

The advanced search function is extremely effective and can help you narrow down your results. One of the best features of Scruff is the events. You can find events in your city to meet gay singles in real life. Scruff is free to use with the option to upgrade to a premium account.

12. her

Her app is one of the only dating apps out there made specifically for women in the gay community. Her is set up like a social media platform– users can post statuses, pictures, make comments, and meet other women online. This platform is ideal for finding friends, hookups, and casual sex.

The biggest downfall to this hookup app is the size of the user base. With 4 million active users, this dating app has a smaller dating pool than other hookup apps. That being said, many women report successfully finding a match using this app. Her is free for women and available in any app store.

14. plenty of fish

Plenty Of Fish has quickly become one of the best hookup sites around. This option is available as both a desktop website and an app. Now, it’s true that many people use this site to find a long-term relationship. That being said, with 3 million active users every day, it’s easy to find casual dating opportunities as well. Due to the number of users on this online dating site, it’s ideal for people in rural areas.

Plenty of Fish encourages its users to be honest about what they’re looking for in order to find the best match. That means if you’re looking for a hookup or one-night stand, you can find it on this adult dating site. Like Tinder, the huge number of users means there is potential for fake accounts. Keep your eye out for catfish, and you should be good to go. Plenty of Fish offers a free membership option with a wide range of features.

15. elitesingles

EliteSingles is a hookup site made for the highly educated. You’ll quickly find that all of the users on this online dating site possess an above-average education. Unlike TheLeague, this hookup site is geared towards a slightly older audience. The vast majority of the singles on this adult dating site are over 30 years of age.

Now, the only downside to this hookup site, is that many people are looking for a serious relationship. But don’t let that stop you from looking for casual sex on this site. Plenty of users are able to find local hookups on EliteSingles. You can create a free account to see what this hookup site has to offer.

16. bumble

Women are given the control to find potential matches

Matches disappear after 24 hours if she doesn’t send a message

Bumble is by far the best hookup app for women. Bumble gives women the power by allowing women to choose when and if they want to start a conversation. In other words, women make the first move. While that may seem like a drag for male members, it can actually be a nice change of pace.

Because of the nature of the app, there is a high female-to-male ratio, which is a big plus for the men on the app. Bumble is great for women seeking casual dating, one-night stands, and friends with benefits. The best part is, Bumble is completely free to use.

Free hookup sites and apps- wrap up

Finding a decent hookup site for free is not as challenging as you may have thought. All of the hookup sites on this list have a free trial or membership so you can find someone to hookup in no time. For those of you seeking hookups, these online dating sites are all excellent options. Whether you’re looking for a casual or serious relationship, you can find someone on these sites. Sign up for one of these free dating sites and find your perfect match.

1. grindr

We all knew we would start here. Miss thing is the standard, the OG, the black monolith that appeared before the chimps in 2001: A Space Odyssey and changed the face of man. Except in this case, all the primates are yelling “Got a dick pic!? Got a dick pic!?”

Grindr sets up the basic template of how all gay dating is or isn’t: everything is reactive to Grindr whether it wants to be or not, so if you like or dislike this app is going to formulate where you go from here. Grindr, fundamentally, is based around location: men appear in order of descending proximity and everything else goes from there. You can filter by various categories, but fundamentally, the nearer they are the more you will see them. Get used to seeing the same 30 faces and get used to running into them at Waitrose every Saturday, even after they turned you down.

The most blessed and cursed thing about Grindr is – because it’s so ubiquitous – that it really is a broad church. Here you will find the fetishists just trying to indulge their kink (totally fine!) the couples looking for a third (also fine!), the people trying to organise chemsex parties (slightly less fine!), the escorts trying to find clientele (should be more fine!), the straight boys without a pic on the hunt or dick (a very thorny thicket!) and maybe, just maybe, a G B or T person looking for a hook-up or a date.

Grindr has improved a lot over the years: you now have the ability to post multiple pictures, alert someone if you’re into them without having to say a word, and actually get bloody notifications without paying.

There are also some interesting additions of recent, including the fact profiles now allow you to mention your preferences about being sent, or receiving, NSFW. You can engage in all the usual conversational beats – “Hey, wuu2?”, “Got pix?”, “Top or btm?”, “Host or travel?”, “Into smells?” – or you can try to play it a bit different. No shade, all T: Grindr is the most economical and ergonomic of dating platforms and if that’s not your scene – if you’re looking for the nebulous, wibbly-wobbly badinage of human interaction – that’s not what this menu was ever designed for. That being said, you may find some people looking for conversation! That’s not impossible! But don’t judge people if that’s not why they’re here: Grindr has a very utilitarian role to play and it does it well. Nobody came into the digital world looking for the sexual prude police. Judge nobody and dox no one.

3. chappy

Known for: allowing you to filter out men based on your intentions

When I used Chappy back in the day, its main sell was the sliding scale at its top: slide in one direction and you could filter for men looking for “mr right”. Sliding the toggle in the other direction got you “mr right now”. As it was new, and late to the party, it meant that people flocking to the app were ones tired of the current market and looking for something new. I had a pretty high ratio of good dates, anecdotally. The scale has changed what it allows you to filter between and they’re still trying to settle on what exactly the two poles will be, but it can be useful for those who want – without blocking account after account – a way of find people who are looking for exactly the same outcome.

It’s from the people behind Bumble (and other apps) and was born out of a desire to provide an alternative to the Grindr-centric marketplace. It’s got, probably, a smaller pool, but a pool that has had enough of the rest of the options out there and is looking for something different. If that’s been your experience so far, you’ll probably find someone like-minded there.

Worth noting: as part of the Badoo and Bumble family, Chappy also has video dating services available for users if you want to meet the people you speak to but are still not comfortable meeting in person.

5. surge

Surge is… I mean, it’s… what is Surge? It’s… Well, it’s the exact same interface as Tinder, but for gay men. But here’s the thing: have you ever heard of Surge? Who is using Surge? What are people getting from this app? If you really enjoy the ability to swipe left and right because the gamification of human sexuality is a real thrill for you, Surge gives you all you want and more. Otherwise, there’s nothing to suggest this app is a home to any particular approach to dating, or demographic, that you wouldn’t find on more mainstream apps.

6. growlr

A dating app specifically for bears, cubs and all men who fancy those aforementioned dad bods. Whether you enjoy the categorisation of gay men’s bodies or not, these apps exist and people use them. If you yourself feel a little bit more body-conscious and want to be in a space where being both sexual and thicc is praised rather than risky, Growlr might be an excellent starting point even if you move on elsewhere.

7. mr x

Formerly known as “Mister”, Mr X is designed for gay men over the age of 30. It’s not particularly competent, or especially jazzy, and when you get to smaller apps with less known niches it’s often just a smaller pool of the same people you saw on Grindr and Scruff. But Mr X does exist. Since coming back under its new, slightly sci-fi name, Mr X also works in the background to try and find you potential partners who match the type of men you’re already trying to date (a lot of apps keep track of the categories most of the men you’re trying to chirpse belong to: Scruff’s data I often found dangerously illuminating). In that way it’s not dissimilar to Hinge and is also available on desktop as well.

The founder of Mr X, Carl Sandler, also founded Daddyhunt – an app designed for meeting “daddies” – and Knki, an app for people in the fetish community. If either of those happen to be your particular taste, they also might be worth trying.

8. adam4adam

Adam4Adam – a long-standing American dating website, predominantly used in the US and yet also sponsoring posts among the European thots I just happen to follow on Instagram – has now moved into the app game as well. Adam4Adam has somewhat garnered a reputation as a place where untoward types would find closeted gay servicemen and public figures and out them. This isn’t the site’s fault, but institutional homophobia’s, but it’s worth mentioning. The site is free and also offers live cams, pornography and a sex shop.

9. romeo

Known for: being the gay equivalent of the European Union

Otherwise known as PlanetRomeo and GayRomeo, this site and app are both huge in German speaking countries. If you’re in MunichZurich or Vienna, you may have more success using Romeo than other apps. That being said, usage in the UK is low – about 2 per cent of its total user base in 2016 – so it might not be your best domestic bet.

10. hornet

Known for: keeping gay men in dangerous countries safe

Never heard of Hornet? The likelihood is that you live in a country where homophobia isn’t a criminal offence. Although Hornet exists all over the world, it becomes a saving grace in countries where Grindr is banned or dangerous due to fake profiles being out to catch you and incriminate you (Saudi Arabia, Chechnya, etc, etc). For example, Hornet is the biggest gay dating app in Turkey, where you’re “safe” in Istanbul and Ankara but in danger everywhere else. The thing is that it’s also an app where people are being incredibly discreet due to the same dangers. It’s also not safe to use Hornet in some countries, like Indonesia, where it was banned in 2016, or the UAE.

13. the straight ones

Known for: being focused more on dating than hook-ups

The apps designed for heterosexuals have slowly but surely also become homes for sodomy, though with something like Bumble the purpose is different: as the fundamental sell is that women can initiate conversation. As we have actively exorcised them from said conversation, it’s basically just Tinder until Bumble decides that only bottoms can say hello.

However, while it might seem that trying to force our square peg into a round hole is the wrong way to go, they are worth the time. It’s less geographical, so the pool is wider and often gay, bisexual and trans users have come here because they want to date more than they want to hook-up, if that’s what you’re after.

In my experience, the apps have more selective and more exasperated user pools as you go from biggest to smallest: Tinder is basically the same as trying to get dick on a bus, Bumble is full of the people who are sick of Tinder’s shit, Hinge is for those who found Bumble too exasperating. I got to the Bumble level and then I found my boyfriend and love of my life, which is a shame in some ways because Hinge seems like a really great app for making strong connections and not a shame in the more important way that I’ve got somebody who I can use as an excuse to get out of social events I don’t want to go to.

The best free and social dating apps

One of the best-known dating apps around. Tinder allows users to ‘swipe right’ on images of users if they’re interested in them and ‘swipe left’ if they’re not. It uses a minimal interface and bases its matches on location to the user.

Hinge hinges on (sorry) the fact that you have a Facebook account. Simply put, this dating app finds matches for you that already exist in your wider social network. So, anyone you chat to won’t be a stranger in the strictest sense. A good feature for women who might feel apprehensive about joining a dating app for the first time.

Another dating app designed with women in mind. Bumble is one of the more popular dating apps among women due to its feature that only allows women to message first. A good choice for anybody looking to make the first move!

4. ShipOne of the newer dating apps on the market, Ship has a unique proposition – what if your friends and family could control your dating profile? Simply put, you sign up, add people you really, really trust to your ‘crew’ and voila. They can now swipe for you and connect you to members. With online dating becoming more popular, why not get a little help from your friends?

Born out of many singles crying out for an app that allows you to invite a date to an event you want to go to, meet ‘How About We’. A meet-cute rolled into an app it helps announce they are going to the cinema, concert, bar etc. And allows other users to request an invitation. It also has a great ‘Date Map’ which shows who else wants to have a chit-chat at 12am on Sunday.

Like punctuality? Then Coffee Meets Bagel might be the dating app for you. Every day at 12pm you’re sent ‘bagels’ — potential matches — and encouraged to start chatting with one of their personalized ice-breakers. Recommended as a good dating app for those who don’t want to be left on ‘read’.

Hily is a relatively new dating app and uses technology to match users better. Using swiping functions, likes, messages and the ability to create stories, the intelligent app learns more about you, giving you better match suggestions in the future.

Clover mixes and matches some interesting app features to create something unique. A pinch of traditional swiping, mixed with instant chat options, and top it all off with social mixers with no dating pressure and you’re got, Clover.

So far Facebook’s much-awaited dating app aptly called ‘Dating’ has been very hush-hush. In 2018, they invited Wired in to discuss some of the features. Unsurprisingly, it relies on users having a Facebook account and instead of just swiping you’ll be prompted to discuss something about the users profile — a picture, an event their attending, etc. Facebook Dating recently launched in the US to some users, but not all – will it take off?

10. BadooWith 400 million members worldwide it’s highly unlikely you won’t meet someone worth flirting with on Badoo. No swiping here, Badoo gives you a small tailored pool of singles to choose from based on – wait for it – what celebrity you fancy. Yep, you upload a picture of celebrity you have a huge crush on and Badoo tries to find someone who looks like that for you. Great, right?

The best gay and lesbian dating apps

Her is one of the most popular lesbian dating apps on the market. It has the ‘swiping’ feature that lets you accept or decline prospective partners, hence it being referred to as the ‘lesbian tinder’. After you’ve swiped ‘yes’, you can send hearts before finally matching.

Chappy, a merger of the word ‘choice’ and ‘happy’, gives gay men the option of filtering for short and long-term relationships in one simple app. If you’re looking for Mr Right or Mr Right Now, Chappy has you covered offering a safe, inclusive space to chat with other matches — giving the user a positive experience from a gay dating app.

Gay men looking for a dating app like Tinder need to look no further. Grindr is a dating app that alerts you when other members are nearby. It’s also a dating app with a social reputation as being very popular in the gay community for its high success rate.

14. ZoeA relatively new but growing queer dating app is Zoe. Aimed at lesbian, bisexual, and queer women, Zoe works by swiping like a lot of the modern dating apps but what it also does is ask you questions in between swiping. This gives Zoe a better idea of what you’re looking for in a partner and adjusts your matches accordingly.

The best religious dating apps

Christian Mingle is a religious dating app aimed at relationship-ready single Christians who are seeking a match who shares their values. Like the Christian Mingle site, the dating app prioritizes God-centered relationships and lets singles filter by factors such as denomination.

Interested in Jewish dating? Then odds are you’ve heard of Jdate, a Jewish matchmaking site that turned 20 in 2018. The site pre-dates the rise of dating apps, but in recent years they’ve joined the smartphone revolution and now you can seek marriage-minded Jewish singles in the Jdate app.

The best niche and quirky  apps for dating

Tired of all the lovey-dovey cutesy dating apps? Then Hater might be just up your alley. It’s a simple idea really, instead of listing all the things you love on your dating profile and engaging in a passionate conversation with someone who shares your joy, just talk about things you hate. Hater will ask your opinion on various topics and you’ll be matched with someone who hates all the same things are you!

If music, not food, is the key to your heart then Tastebuds might be the app to find your special someone. It also mixes in some social network elements like Clover so that you can chat in a low-pressure environment. If you’re looking for friends there’s also a ‘concert buddy’ option.

If you’re looking to gamify your dating life then Quiz Date Live might be the dating app you’re looking for. Similar to popular reality dating shows mixed with a classic quiz format, Quiz Date Live invites featured daters who have applied to be on a live stream to other daters.

Following off Bumble’s lead, Pickable empowers women by giving them ultimate control of their dating apps. Pickable allows women to be totally anonymous on the app, they can browse prospective partners and only allow themselves to reveal themselves to when they want.

Ever thought, if only I could show people how great I am on dates? Well Do I Date might have been reading your mind. Built on total transparency, Do I Date changes your profile into a place where past dates can leave reviews and rate you. If you’re a great person to date then a high rating will probably increase your chances of finding the special someone.

22. DigEveryone loves their dog, but do you really, really love your dog? Dig is a dating app designed for dog lovers only, show off your furry friend in your profile, do some swiping and then meet at a local dog park for a date. A great way to meet someone who values their pet as much as you do.

Miss the days when you were waiting by the phone for that cute boy/girl to call? Well, with Happy Hour the concept is pretty similar. Join the dating queue on the app at 8pm and see who else is online. Find some matches and then do a video call for a max of five minutes, are you vibing? Then why not go out then and there? In an age where meeting IRL can be tricky, Happy Hour demystifies any anxiety.

24. DatefitIf the gym is your temple then Datefit might be the perfect dating app for you. You can match with people based on the kind of exercise you like to do, how often you do it, or how crucial it is to have a partner who helps you on your fitness journey.

25. DineDo you just want to meet up for good old fashioned dinner and drinks? Dine gives you the opportunity to match with likeminded people, you can see what kind of foodie they are as well. Once locked in, start chatting, pick a date to meet and then select a restaurant – all available within the app.

26. LoosidMore and more people are choosing to be alcohol-free, in fact, in the US 30% of people don’t drink at all. Which is why an app like Loosid is perfect for people who want to go out, enjoy life but do it without the booze. Aimed at people who simply don’t like booze, cannot drink, or have struggled with addiction, Loosid is an open friendly community.

27. AlignIf you believe the tale of your next love is written in the stars then Align might be the best app for you. Users are matched on their star signs, you can also build your profile but the core idea is that you should be dating someone who matches with your sign. Trying to find that perfect Capricorn? Us too.

The best exclusive and members-only apps

A relatively new trend in dating apps are ones that are private or members-only. Raya only allows members who meet specific requirements i.e. having a creative industry job or being an influencer on social media. After that, you’ll be vetted by the current users before being ushered onto this exclusive mobile dating app.

29. The LeagueThe League is another elite dating app that requires you to provide information about yourself in order to be approved and gain access. The information isn’t anything too precious that you wouldn’t part with on any other online dating website; it includes your LinkedIn account, job title, and your educational background

Clearly selected, cleverly connected is the Inner Circle’s tag line. With a screening process to ensure membership stays within the ‘inner circle’ and real-life singles events, this dating app is marketing more like an exclusive club than something you play with while you’re waiting for the bus. Like LinkedIn, you’ll also get alerts when someone is checking out your profile.

31. LuxyAre you really, really rich? Are you looking to connect with other massively wealthy people? Then Luxy might be for you! This isn’t an app for singles to find their next rich husband, instead it’s so well-off members of society can date without the worry they’ll only be sought after for their material assets. Jealous? Us too.

The best dating apps for long-term relationships

Probably one of the most well-known dating apps is bear-magazine.com Promising users a chance at real, long-term success, its app isn’t too different from its desktop site. Upload your profile, get matches and meet people — simple.

33. eHarmonyeHarmony is another serious dating site that prefers to connect its users based on personality. With its focus on marriage, it’s a solid choice for those in their 20s or early 30s who want to upgrade to a paid dating app.

34. OkCupidOkCupid is well known for its personality test and savvy data understanding when it comes to dating. On its online dating app it allows users the freedom to express themselves, it’s very LGBTQI+ friendly with 13 different sexual orientations and 22 gender identities.

35. POFPOF (Plenty of Fish) has been around since 2003 so are experts in the dating game. They focus on long-term relationships more than some of the new dating app players. Signing up includes a lengthy ‘chemistry’ test designed to help POF give you more qualified matches.

36. ZooskRather than using a matchmaking personality test, Zoosk pulls data from your social accounts, allowing for a more efficient sign-up process. Zoosk also has a large number of members, giving new users even more opportunity to match with lots of different types of people.

EliteSingles is one of the best apps for people looking for serious, long-lasting relationships with professional singles. While appearances matter, most people know that you need more to create a relationship. The membership of the EliteSingles app is from 30-50, so with the benefit of age comes wisdom to know that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Not a social media butterfly? No worries. EliteSingles doesn’t need any of your social network information to get you started. All you need is an email address and a password to sign up.

Signing up for a dating website can be work for some people. Creating a profile, taking some nice pictures, and then you have to start searching for that perfect person. With EliteSingles we do the heavy lifting for you, we send you 3-7 matches per day so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy dating.

But how do you pick the dating app that’s right for you? If you search for dating apps you might see some articles asking ‘eHarmony vs. Match?’ this is because both of these websites serve similar members. Both websites have a huge amount of users. EliteSingles US has 173,000+ new members per month, all highly educated, professional singles looking for long-lasting love.

We cater to lesbianchildfree datingChristian dating, you name it and we probably have some members who are looking for love. The thing that unites all EliteSingles members? They all have a genuine desire to find that special someone to spend the rest of their lives with.

A guide to popular digital spots to find love

by Abby Lee Hood, AARP, January 14, 2021 | Comments: 0

En español | Jeff Jordy has used online dating services off and on for 14 years, since his divorce. Dating services like bear-magazine.com, eHarmony, and OurTime have all flitted across his phone or computer screen at one time or another.

Personal experience and input from friends have helped him determine which dating apps work best for him. But there are many more options available than when he entered the dating scene.

You “learn their differences and what kind of people might be on them and if it’s a good fit,” says Jordy, 58, of Nashville, Tennessee.

The number of dating app users in the U.S. was expected to reach 26.6 million in 2020, according to , an 18.4 percent increase from 2019.

A growing number of singles are trying to navigate these online dating options, especially during the pandemic — where meeting in person is less likely and poses a risk of COVID-19 transmission. In fact, the number of dating app users in the U.S. was expected to reach 26.6 million in 2020, according to Business Insider, an 18.4 percent increase from 2019.

Fiona Bloom, 54, rejoined dating apps recently after worrying she might not find a significant other amid the coronavirus outbreak. “COVID-19 has wiped out my love life,” says the New York City resident.

Dating apps and sites run the gamut from free to paid, and many offer free versions but charge a fee for all the bells and whistles. Since the pandemic began, many of these apps have added enhanced communication options, including video chat, designed to address the fact that it’s hard to meet in person.

There are apps for general audiences and those aimed at singles over 50, while others try to match daters who are religious or those in the LGBTQ+ community. Here’s your guide to some of the options.

gay dating

Focusing more on serious gay relationships than casual hookups or adult dating. Signing up is free, but watch out for the fine print in their terms of service: „All amounts you pay in order to have the right to access the Services are non-refundable. We do not issue whole or partial refunds, regardless of whether any of the Services have been utilized or whether you have canceled your subscription before its expiration.“

men4ken

Probably the funniest and lightest gay dating site on this list, Men4Ken actually have a series of Ken dolls displayed proudly on the site as member suggestions, showing users how they can define their relationship wants and needs through a simple picture and a few words. Must-see, although I’d check the fine print before sharing your credit card, as there’s a no refund policy.

oh mojo

Their tagline says it all: „Gay dating for guys.“ A low key site without a lot of bells or whistles. Best feature of the site? That you can search all the profiles before signing up (which doesn’t take long anyway, but it’s nice to see if there are people in your area first).

we compare the costs and features of tinder, rsvp, eharmony and more, so you can spend more time finding your perfect match.

So you’re looking for love, just like millions of other Australians. But where exactly should you be looking? Do free online dating sites offer a good service at the right price? Or should you opt  for paid online dating sites instead?

We’ve reviewed dating websites like RSVP, eHarmony, Oasis, OkCupid, Plenty of Fish and Zoosk, as well as apps Bumble and Tinder, to help you single out which kind of site is most likely to suit you.

Our investigation looks at key things like price, privacy, and demographics and found that online dating scams are rife, and some privacy policies and terms and conditions are riddled with disturbing provisions.

1. zoe

Branded as “the world’s best ranked dating app for queer women” on their site, Zoe is a great download for those of you looking to meet local women. Oh, and If you’re tired of having limited options and seeing the same old profiles, good news: The app boasts a 3.9+ million registered user database, which is, like, a lot of profiles to sort through. Another bonus: Since Zoe is a “primarily visual app,” they reject any photos of users wearing sunglasses, nature views, or kitten photos, which = way less fake profiles to sort through.

2. feeld

Feeld is kind of amazing in that it’s not only ranked as one of the best dating apps for polyamorous folx, but it’s super, super inclusive. (Like, they offer 20+ sexual and gender identities to choose from when signing up.) When you make your profile, you can specify your “interests” and “desires”—which basically means you can opt in or out of seeing couples in your profile. You can also tailor the experience to strictly seeing female-identifying profiles, too. Highly, highly recommend.

3. her

Specifically for lesbian, bisexual, and queer people, Her has a community of more than 4 million users looking to find their match. With in-app communities and Her-hosted events, this app empowers women to find what they’re looking for but to actually get off the app and do it IRL.

4. fem

Fem dating is a predominantly video-based app (pics too!), which encourages you to create a video that eligible matches will „heart.“ Use texts, photos, and vids to communicate once you’re matched, or opt for the public group chat, which is a less intimidating setting than just speaking one-on-one.

5. lesly

As the leading lesbian dating service, Lesly provides a place for women to connect, get to know each other, and fall in love—or find whatever it is you’re looking for (FWB, hookups, serious relationships, etc.). Sign up for free and use the Spark feature to check for local singles around you.

6. scissr

Designed for lesbians by lesbians, Scissr allows you to clearly state what you’re looking for right on your profile, with a variety of different filters and settings you can use to tailor your matches. View your messages, edit your profile, and invite friends all while growing in a community with like-minded individuals.

8. bounce

Although not completely tailored for the LGBTQ+ community, this app revolutionizes dating when you’re experiencing some serious dating fatigue.

Considered the „best app for when you’re tired of watching Netflix alone with your dogs,“ according to a Bounce member, this app allows you to „Check-in“ at specific times when you want to go on a date, and then match with other members in real time. Once matched, each user has a minute to decide whether they want to meet or not. And if both agree, Bounce picks a spot for you to meet. Easy, right?

Bumble

In many ways, the Bumble experience is pretty much identical to the Tinder style of swiping, but rather than either party making the first move, it’s up to the girl to say something witty and impressive first within a day.

For many women that we chatted to, this was a breath of fresh air in the often seedy and overwhelming world of online dating and cringe-worthy first messages.

Hayley told us: “I LOVE it! The woman speaks first, and it means guys are way more likely to speak to you if you’re not just one of many.”

It also seems that the higher quality experience and focus on women being in control attracts a slightly better standard of men.

Louise told us: “The men are better, looks and personality.” Paul agreed: “It’s Tinder, but better.”

Hinge

Calling itself “the relationship app”, Hinge is aimed at those who are tired of Tinder, or just have really sore thumbs from all the swiping.

You’re prompted to ask a series of questions, but you can choose which you answer. The idea is you can build an authentic picture of yourself, with answers, photos, details about what you’re reading or listening to and even video. So you’re more likely to find someone with genuine shared interests, rather than just a nice face.

The biggest difference is there’s no ‘hot or not?’ style swiping. You can like someone’s activities and photos, which reminds us more of Facebook-style interactions, but packaged up within a dating app.

Does this all sound a bit too good to be true? That’s maybe because it is.

Sarah said: “Hinge definitely sounds good in theory. But I haven’t had a date through it yet. I’m trying to stay patient and positive, but I think the instant buzz of Tinder might have ruined me.”

Okcupid

Competition for a date may be tough. But competition between the top dating apps is fierce. That means it can be hard for other apps to really stand out, which is why OKCupid has turned its focus to matching people up on a ‘deeper level.’

By filling out your profile and answering questions, the app’s algorithm will suggest potential matches who share your interests in the hope you’ll build deeper connections, which you can easily see from a ‘compatibility’ score displayed next to other users. You can also link up your Instagram profile if you think it gives potential matches a better picture of what you’re all about.

Nick said: “The OKCupid dates I went on were often the most interesting, with people I could genuinely chat to.”

The app is free and, unless you use its ‘quickmatch’ Tinder-style option, it’s all about browsing through many profiles and breaking the ice with a message. But this focus on messages can lead to some clear downsides.

Sarah said: “The fact you can easily message for free comes with the downside that you might get a fair few unwanted messages.”

OKCupid recently refreshed its user profiles with an update that allows users to define their pronouns. This information shows up alongside gender and orientation.

Tinder

Here it is, Tinder. The app that’s apparently the cause of everything, from the rise of STDs and breeding promiscuity to global warming (okay, we’re messing with you with that one). But regardless of who you ask, it has become synonymous with casual dating and hookups rather than those looking for their soulmates.

It’s perfect if you’re looking for something not so serious, but that’s not to say that it’s impossible to find a more long-term love. After all, we’ve all got a friend-of-a-friend who married someone they matched with on Tinder, right? Unless we’re all just referring to the same couple…

The core concept is simple enough. You see someone’s photo. If you like it, swipe right. If you don’t, swipe left. And then repeat a couple of hundred times. If you’ve swiped right on someone and they’ve swiped right on you as well, you’ll be notified and can begin messaging one another.

Hayley Minn says: “I used to love it, it’s so easy to use and fun, but it now feels like a game more than anything and I’ve never had a date lead to anything serious.”

Despite the fact it seems to be losing its edge, we included it because it’s still popular, and the large user numbers mean the more chance of dates.

Louise said: “I’m sick of it, but most people are on it. And I’ve had a few good, well, mediocre, dates.”

Thursday

Are you sick of hoarding matches? Swiping right leading to more RSI than TLC? Are you getting matches but not getting messages? Thursday wants to combat all these dating pitfalls. By limiting free app use to one day a week (guess which day), and clearing your messages and matches when the clock strikes midnight and Friday rolls on, Thursday makes matches feel less like consumables, and more like considered opportunities – or at least that’s the logic.

After trying it out, our resident gay dater, Basil is convinced that Thursday does remedy a few frustrations more popular apps like Hinge and Tinder can lead to. Specifically, it lights a fire in your belly to get the admin side of things sorted by midnight. Whether you want to swap numbers or arrange to grab a drink, if you don’t do it by the day’s end, you start over next week, with no guarantees of seeing the same daters.

The app is also a godsend for compulsive dating app addicts. On the website, it states: „6 days of the week, this app tells you to f**k bear-magazine.com it’s not even sorry“. And while it doesn’t actually tell you that, it might as well. You can’t access a single dating feature Friday through Wednesday.

As inclusive as the app is when it comes to genders and sexualities, it isn’t inclusive from a geography point of view. Unless you live in London or New York, you won’t be getting your Thursday on for the time being. What’s more, the app is only accepting 100,000 members in those locations, so if you’re in the big smoke or big apple, sign up before you’re locked out every day of the week.

Plenty of fish

Plenty of Fish is another app that allows you to create a profile, answer questions or just upload your favorite selfies. It’s got a large user-base and when it comes to success rates, it really divides opinion. The huge choice of, erm, fish, tend to mean there are a few long-term love stories and lots of “okay I guess” dating anecdotes.

Louise said: “It’s a totally mixed bag. Be ready to hunt for people through the droves and droves. I’ve had a few fun dates through it, you just have to put the time in to weed through the rubbish.”

Paul said: “All I ever hear from men is that women never reply, and all I ever hear from women is that they get too many messages.”

That said, we know personally of one real world couple that are now married having met through Plenty of Fish, so love can be found here!

Bear-magazine.com

bear-magazine.com is another older dating website that’s evolved over the years to become one of the most popular apps. The profiles are detailed (if people fill them in), which means you can find out more about someone before you speak to them, and location-based searching means you’re shown people who live or work nearby.

One of the most interesting developments to bear-magazine.com’s proposition is group dating events, which sound weird but could set it apart from the rest.

Paul said: “I love that match are evolving by introducing dating events. They have the potential to be the future of dating and it’s nice to see one of the top online companies acknowledging that, without losing their original identity.”

Veggly

More than just an excuse to send aubergine emojis, Veggly is a perfect app for single vegans and vegetarians around the world. If you’re anything like our resident animal-loving singleton, navigating sharing your veggie status on other dating apps can be a catch 22.

He’s had everything from quips about his vegan sausage to messages calling him sanctimonious for putting his big V status on his profile. Veggly cuts through the noise, with a smaller dating pool to swim in, but arguably, one that is more matched with your stance on animals, and probably other things like the environment.

Far from being exclusive to 100 percent vegans and vegetarians, the inclusive app also welcomes folks in transition between meat eater to veggie. As for how it works, Veggly is split into five sections: Home, Chat, Super Likes, Profile and Settings. Home is a vertical list of potential matches set against your criteria, which you can set in the profile section. That’s also where you can unsurprisingly, fill out your profile, setting parameters like gender (with options for male, female, and other (with space to fill in how you identify).

The chat section is a traditional repository for your conversations, while Super Likes shows you people who think you’re pretty darn swell. Aside from the whole vegan/vegetarian angle, it’s definitely one of the more straightforward, low-algorithm apps, making for what feels like a pretty organic interaction experience. As for what you get when you pay for premium, you can see who liked you, ditch the adverts, get some extra super likes and view potential partners in other locations.

When we first installed Veggly in 2018, we didn’t feature it on this list because there just weren’t that many people using it; but now, it’s ripe and juicy, so if you’ve had a similar experience in the past, it definitely warrants another go in 2021.

 wooplus

We spoke with three happily fat people specifically about dating apps that are a bit more body positive than some of the usual suspects. In conversations with the two women, one word that came up a lot was ‘fetishized’.

Some apps aren’t so much for curvy people, as for curvy women specifically, and for the not curvy men that are attracted to them. Of course, those apps are doing their thing and that’s all good, however, they can make women feel like their fat’s being fetishized. The consensus was that WooPlus is the most inclusive app for both fatter men and women, while also having a healthy mix of admirers too.

Weight aside, the app isn’t afraid to get down with those difficult questions. Heck, it asks about your income before pretty much anything else! There are other criteria you can fill out that are a bit more typical: religion, ethnicity, whether or not you have or want kids.

One issue we found when we tried the app from a man seeking man perspective was that we were very frequently presented with men, who presented as heterosexual. Who’s to say what they actually like in the sheets, but if you’re not straight, definitely keep your wits about you, or you might be messaging someone who bats for the other team, or at the very least says they do in their profile.

On the plus side, the app is free, and you can match and message with people without paying a cent. That said, for unlimited swipes and VIP access, you have to pay, and as with most dating apps, it isn’t cheap, costing £13.49 a month in the UK, and around $18.99 in the US.

Scruff

After a hairy hookup? Scruff takes the basic dating app experience, and tailors it to gay guys looking for burly, furry men, also known as bears, polar bears, cubs and otters.

Scruff quotes over 12 million worldwide users, and has recently expanded into AirBnB style travel accommodation, with a gay-friendly slant, also letting you know if fellow travellers from out of town are looking for some company. Paid tiers unlock additional features for committed users, but the free experience is worthy of inclusion here.

Basil enjoyed the „instant messaging, whether you’ve been highlighted for a positive match or not. It means there’s not instant rejection, but be ready for unsolicited messages too.“ He encouraged using the private gallery feature to have more meaningful interactions with would-be dates.

Have you found your scene?

Online LGBT dating is now so common it’s quickly becoming the norm. These days, nearly half of the American public knows a couple or two who has met their spouse or partner online, and the attitudes are growing progressively positive. In fact, the online dating scene has surged for people under 35 – as expected – but also for those in their 40s, 50s and even early 60s. This means the chances of LGBT singles finding “The One” online has doubled in the last couple of years.

Okay, so you know the stats. But do you know your scene? One of the hardest things about LGBT dating sites can be finding the right platform for you. Like anything, it helps to know what you’re looking for, long-term. But, it’s not all on you. Pick the wrong site and your results could be disheartening. You’re a successful man or woman looking for a same-sex relationship and they’re just looking for some casual fun? Sound familiar?

The problem with many of the dating platforms “on the scene” is that, while they may be niche, catering specifically to LGBT singles, many people don’t know what they’re looking for. If you do know that what you’re looking for is a passionate partnership and perhaps even a marriage, then it’s tough to find a match.

Lgbt dating and love re-imagined

Let’s face it: meeting singles online, whether you’re straight or part of the LGBT community, can feel like a distant experience. Dating apps and sites often give you a platform to connect with matches online but they don’t go the extra mile. Anyone can sign up and the process of making those connections, browsing profiles and finding “compatibility” is largely up to you. It can get exhausting, and can start to feel pointless.

On standard LGBT dating sites, the strategy is usually just to get some kind of response from another person. Because of this, an attractive single you have your eye on can be bombarded with messages from so many others and you’re simply lost in their inbox. If you’re a lesbian woman, or a gay man, looking for a same sex relationship, many of these sites and apps don’t filter based on preference; even if you’ve marked yourself as LGBT, you may still be matched with incompatible partners, or even the opposite sex.

A profile and photos can only tell you so much. When you’re hooking up, this is not a big deal. But when you’re looking to find a relationship that’s going to be based on a long-term commitment, you need the process to be as organic and supportive as possible. EliteSingles offers an “intelligent matchmaking” process that is curated and supported by our in-house team. You’re not simply signing up for a spot online — you’re opting into a wide and diverse community of truly elite singles, with 85% of our members being highly educated and 100% of profiles being vetted and verified.

Clarity is important in lgbt dating

The truth is that you can’t plan for love — it comes in at the right time, when it’s supposed to. But, if you’re ready for a relationship, this doesn’t mean that you can’t increase your chances of finding the right same-sex relationship for you by using a site like ElitesSingles for a different LGBT dating site and app experience.

You can’t plan love but you can definitely get clear on what you want in your partner and that is exactly what EliteSingles is all about: we not only want you to be clear and serious about finding a meaningful, marriage-minded connection in your life, we want your matches to be the right ones for you. We want to get clear on who you are and what you do so that our streamlined dating service can deliver 3-7 truly compatible matches daily. If and when you have more time, you can always search through additional profiles using our ‘Have you met…’ feature too.

We deliver only a handful of matches so you can spend time considering them. America’s government viewed one gay-dating app with chinese ties as a national-security concern. can another that has just listed in new york expect similar treatment?

“I think that I was the only person in the world attracted to people of the same gender.” So begins Ma Baoli’s letter to investors. The 43-year-old Mr Ma spent nearly two decades as a closeted policeman in small-town China before founding a gay-dating app called Blued. Today it is China’s most popular social network for homosexual men. On July 8th its parent company, BlueCity, listed on New York’s Nasdaq exchange, at a market value of over $600m.

Blued launched in China in 2012, 11 years after homosexuality was removed from the country’s list of mental disorders and as social attitudes towards same-sex relations were liberalising (though too many government officials and businesses still harbour hidebound views). An international edition of the app was released in 2015. Just over half of Blued’s 6m active monthly users are in China. The rest are mainly in other parts of Asia. It is the market leader in India, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.

Growth has been brisk. BlueCity’s revenues reached 207m yuan ($30m) in the first quarter, up by 43% year on year. These come mainly from sales of in-app virtual gifts, advertising and membership fees (which let users skip ads, for example). Blued is still loss-making. But that is not holding back ambitions. Mr Ma vows in his shareholder letter to “continue expanding our brand globally” and build “a beautiful rainbow over the capital markets”. America, where gay dating is more mainstream than in most of Asia, is the big pot of gold.

Is it attainable? Blued has so far avoided the sort of scrutiny from American regulators that befell another gay-dating app with Chinese ties: Grindr. Until last month Grindr was owned by Beijing Kunlun, a private Chinese gaming firm which acquired the American app in two separate deals between 2016 and 2018 for a total of $245m. Beijing Kunlun was ultimately forced to divest itself of Grindr on the orders of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (), a federal body which reviews deals for national-security concerns.

Unlike Grindr, which was popular in America before Kunlun bought it, Blued is a minnow outside Asia. Its relative obscurity may shield it from examination for a while. If it starts to gain a foothold in America, which is tussling with China over technology and trade, regulators are likely to take a closer look. Anticipating this, Blued insisted in its prospectus that “data related to users in and outside of China are strictly stored on servers in and outside of China, respectively.” Investors seemed reassured at first; BlueCity’s share price soared by 63% on the first two days of trading. That it has since lost a chunk of those gains suggests that Mr Ma has his work cut out. ■

Advice for gay dating

Looking for gay men? try meetville!

If you are gay and single it’s not that easy to find a partner, especially if you’re living in a small town. But still there are lots of ways to meet men seeking men like you do.

Let’s look at the most common ways to experience gay dating.

Well, there is nothing special in a gay club compared to an ordinary one except for the fact there are only gays there. So you always know that the guy who’s talking to you is gay or bi.  Well, you can also risk a little bit and visit some kind of a secret address party but you are very unlikely to meet a lifetime partner there.

It’s quite difficult to meet a gay guy in a normal situation, where you have absolutely no idea and can’t be sure about the orientation of your chosen one, because with the slightest hint of intimacy, hetero guy will know about your preferences and most likely flip you off.

Looking for gay men online is quite fun and what’s more important – fast! It’s getting more popular everyday, and men seeking men all over the world search for their partners on dating websites or mobile apps. A big advantage of this method is that you can set your sexual orientation type in your profile and make it easier for everyone and yourself of course. You can also set the parameters of gay personals you want to date, like age, appearance, ethnicity, etc. You see? Online dating makes everything easier. So where to meet a local men seeking men? This question has been bothering every queer boy for years. Well, unfortunately most of gay singles do not wear any marking signs. You don’t want to run up to a cute guy in the street and ask him for a date risking to get in the eye. Due to natural shyness, most young gays are not ready to make the first step. What would we do if there were no Internet? It’s probably the most suitable way to meet your gay match. There is no warranties that you will meet your soulmate on your first date or fifth one or even on date number 25. But the main thing is not to despair and go on searching and squander your gifts on trifles.

On Internet, you can exchange messages daily which will help you to know maximum possible information about the men seeking men before the first date face-to-face. Don’t be scared to go on the first date, but for safety’s sake, do not agree to meet by the side of a river of something (though it’s very romantic). You’d better meet in a crowded area in the city center where you can feel safe and comfy.

Still not sure whether to try online gay dating or not? We are sure if you download Meetville you will never regret.

Online gay dating apps : a dilemma

Is online dating a positive development or something to worry about?

It is an easy decision for positive advancement. Interestingly, it’s not online dating—it’s internet meeting individuals pursued by face to face dating.

The expression “online dating” is a piece of the issue and makes individuals who don’t think a lot about it think it alludes to individuals shaping whole connections on the web and just gathering face to face a lot later.

The initial phase in ending up with the correct individual is meeting the ideal individual, and for something so significant in our lives, we’ve had no genuine framework for doing it effectively and insightfully.

For socially awkward or restless or modest individuals, attempting to meet an outsider openly is a bad idea, and in any event, for somebody enchanting and cordial, it’s a tiresome undertaking that requires a great deal of time and courage.

The elective that frequently happens is meeting somebody through companions, which can work, yet it’s constraining yourself to single individuals your dearest loved ones happen to know.

However online dating apps have given an entirely new face to all these worries and concerns.

Best gay or lgbt dating apps

Online dating, when a periphery and vilified movement, is currently over a $2 billion industry.

More than 40 million Americans have tried internet dating out, and over 33% of the American couples wedded somewhere in the range of 2005 and 2012 met on the web.

The primary conspicuous internet dating webpage was bear-magazine.com, which propelled in 1995. eHarmony began in 2000, OkCupid in 2004, and all the more as of late, an influx of versatile individuals swiping applications, similar to Tinder and Hinge, have gotten uncontrollably mainstream.

Lovoo was founded in Dresden, Germany, and has 28 million users worldwide. With four stars from 43k reviews in the iOS App Store, Lovoo has the best review ratio from all listed dating apps in this article.

As you can see in the graphic below, Tinder and Badoo are fighting for the reign of being the most popular dating app in Europe. Lovoo, however, is the most popular and best dating app in Germany.

4. okcupid

OkCupid separates itself from the swiping apps by pushing a story feature that goes beyond just pictures. You can write messages at any time; however, women can only view a man’s first message if she has liked his profile beforehand. OkCupid is popular among LGBT+ Singles as well.

5. once

If a user is in your set proximity, while you are online, the profile will show ‘NOW’, without offering you the exact location for privacy reasons.

8. candidate

These three then answer another question; you get to choose your top 2 for the final question out of their responses.

How it works:

If you’re looking for casual relationships, look no further. AdultFriendFinder is one of the most popular hookup sites around. While traditional dating sites often have a mixture of users seeking serious and casual relationships, almost everyone on AFF is interested in casual sex and one-night stands.

Aside from that, the site is home to the largest online swingers platform. You read that right–AFF is the go-to website for swingers and people with specific kinks.

AFF doesn’t use a matching system like you might find on a hookup app. Rather, you can freely look through profiles to find potential matches. This gives users an element of control over their online dating experience. Although AFF has a bit of an old-school feel, sign-up is free and easy.

How it works:

Seeking is best known for its unique user base. Out of all the hookup sites and apps on this list, this is the only one made for sugar dating.

What is sugar dating? Essentially, sugar dating involves a sugar daddy or momma and a sugar baby. The sugar daddy is usually financially established while the sugar baby is typically young and attractive.

If that sounds like your thing, Seeking is a great place to start. As you browse through the users, you can see their level of education, profession, and other personal details. You can easily find a hookup on this app by reading through user bios to see what they are looking for. The app is totally free for women which is a major plus.

How it works:

OkCupid may be the most well-known online dating site on this list. And if you’re looking for a one-night stand, it’s a surprisingly effective option. Most people think that OkCupid is just for finding serious relationships. In fact, this site is ideal for just about any dating style, including friends with benefits, and casual dating.

That’s because OkCupid allows for a high degree of personalization when it comes to your preferences. Each user fills out a questionnaire that helps the site find a match with similar interests.

This makes it easy to find short-term, casual hookups. Because OkCupid makes it so easy to find what exactly you’re looking for, it’s a popular casual dating app for women. Women can control their online dating experience and find friends with benefits.

How it works:

If you’re on the hunt for great hookup sites, Blendr is a safe bet. Much like Tinder, Blendr is one of the best hookup sites for finding a local match. You’ll find a nice mixture of users seeking both serious and casual relationships.

This adult dating site offers a feature called „Encounters“ that lets members swipe through profiles to quickly find a match. Users have the option to stick with the free basic membership or upgrade to the premium option.

How it works:

When it comes to hookup sites and apps, Luxy is certainly a unique option. This dating app was created exclusively for people who enjoy a luxurious lifestyle. In fact, this is the go-to app for millionaire dating. And if that wasn’t enough, this hookup app also attracts its fair share of stunningly beautiful people as well.

Needless to say, this app has a very specific user base. Now, because of this, you might find that the app has a smaller user base in many areas. Before you let that monetary aspect scare you off, only about 40% of the users are actual millionaires, so you can still sign up, even if you aren’t super-wealthy.

You can get started with a free account, but you’ll be limited to 30 swipes per day. Once you upgrade to a premium membership, you’ll have access to the full feature set.

How it works:

Adam4Adam is a free dating and hookup site for gay men. Out of all the dating sites on this list, this is the most popular option for members of the gay community. This hookup site is most often used to find a one-night stand, rather than a long-term relationship.

Adam4Adam is all about sex-positivity, so if you’re interested in casual sex, you’ll find zero judgment on this hookup site. Users can find a partner with similar interests and get laid in no time. Adam4Adam is completely free to use, so you can get started right away.

How it works:

TheLeague is one of the best hookup sites and apps for young professionals. The app requires a LinkedIn account to sign up, which caters to users with academic and professional history. This also helps to weed out fake profiles. If a good career and college education is something you look for in a potential match, this is the dating app for you.

Now, you may be thinking this site is all about finding a serious relationship. While many people use this site to find someone for a long-term relationship, it’s also great for finding a hookup. Many young professionals are not quite ready to settle down and turn to this hookup site to find a no-strings-attached connection. You can sign up and use TheLeague for free.

How it works:

Out of all the hookup sites made for gay men, Scruff is one of the best options. Scruff has an absolutely massive membership, which makes it very easy to find a hookup in a short time.

On top of that, unlike other hookup sites and apps, Scruff doesn’t restrict you to a specific location. You can use the hookup app to find someone anywhere in the world. This puts Scruff at the top of the list of free hookup apps for traveling. You can download Scruff in the Apple App Store or Google Play store.

Tinder

Best for finding: Casual hookups and relationships.

Pros: Tinder is one of, if not the, most popular dating apps. As so many people use it, you’re bound to find users to chat with, even if you’re somewhere super rural. You can also use Tinder online if you head to their website.

Cons: It’s a tad too easy to accidentally swipe the wrong way – particularly with ‚Super Likes‘ (where the other person gets notified) – so swipe with caution.

Top tip: Avoid the typical Tinder cliches in your bio (i.e. „fluent in sarcasm“, „don’t match if you’re not going to talk“, „6ft because apparently that matters“…). Be original and keep it light.

Grindr

Best for finding: Casual hookups and dates with gay, bisexual, trans and queer people.

Pros: Grindr is the biggest social networking app for its target audience. You can easily find local dates and hookups on here.

Cons: It’s generally known for quite risqué chat and image sharing – if this isn’t for you, we’d recommend giving this app a miss.

Top tip: You can share your location with other users on Grindr, but don’t rush into doing this. We recommend asking for things like their Instagram and phone number before sending your location, or meeting them in person so you’re sure of their identity. Plus, it’s always best to pick somewhere public to initially meet dates from apps.

Hinge

Best for finding: Relationships based on individual preferences.

Pros: „The dating app designed to be deleted“ – Hinge’s slogan makes it clear that this app can help you find a long-term relationship. Its algorithm works out who you’re ‚Most Compatible‘ with and suggests people for you to meet.

Cons: Each time you ‚like‘ someone on here, they’ll be notified and given the option to match with you, which can make it feel a teeny bit more daunting than a mindless Tinder swipe.

Top tip: On Hinge, you can add comments to your profile in response to some prompt questions – avoid going for anything too predictable in your answers (e.g. saying the most spontaneous thing you’ve done is go travelling), and instead say something surprising that will spark conversations.

Match

Pros: Match is a really well-established dating site, aimed at helping people start serious relationships and find love. If this is what you’re looking for, you’ll be able to find like-minded people on here.

Cons: It’s free to register and start using Match, but to read and send messages, you’ll need to sign up for a paid subscription. Also, be sure to cancel your subscription when you stop using the site as it renews automatically.

Top tip: Try Match for free before paying for a subscription – you should be able to get a good idea of whether it’s right for you based on their basic dating features.

Happn

Best for finding: Dates with people you’ve crossed paths with.

Pros: Happn shows you people you walk past, or are likely to cross paths with, which might be more up your street if you’d ideally like to meet someone in person. Plus, it should make it easier to arrange dates if you already live, work or socialise near each other.

Cons: You can see when people were last active on the app, which can make it a little awkward in the early stages of dating between establishing you like each other and having the „let’s delete our dating apps“ chat.

Top tip: Happn’s great for city life where you’ll be crossing paths with loads of people each day. But, if you live somewhere more rural, we’d recommend an app like Hinge that shows you people based on your preferences, rather than just your location.

Eharmony

Pros: eHarmony offers a free trial, letting you take a compatibility test and start seeing how other profiles match up to yours with a ‚compatibility score‘. You can also start interacting with other users by sending Smiles and Icebreakers.

Cons: While you can try out the app for free, you’ll need to pay a subscription fee to use all of the dating features on eHarmony.

Top tip: If you’re looking for the ideal date location near you, have a read through the suggestions on the Great Date Guide on eHarmony’s website – you could discover some lovely new places in your area.

Once

Best for finding: Relationships based on a slow-dating method.

Pros: Each day at noon, Once will show you a profile of someone it thinks would be a good match for you. Plus, they’ve got a (rather brilliant) feature that replaces nude pics sent in chats with images of kittens and, honestly, we’re sold.

Cons: If you’re in a hurry to meet someone, this might not be the app for you…

Top tip: Matches are chosen each day for active users who have been online within the last 48 hours. So, even if you’re not convinced by your match for the day, it’s still worth checking the app every day, or every other day, to keep getting suggested matches.

Plenty of fish

Pros: Plenty of Fish (POF) is one of the oldest and biggest dating sites. When registering for the app, you can expect to answer a series of questions so POF can more accurately work out who you’d be well-matched with.

Cons: The character test slows down the sign-up process.

Top tip: A recent study by POF found that, according to singletons, the three least popular images on dating apps are bathroom selfies, gym selfies and heavily edited/filtered pics. You’re a catch, so leave out these types of pics on Plenty of Fish and you’ll quickly get chatting with salmon great.

3. plenty of fish

If you’re looking for a free dating site that goes off more than just whether you fancy someone’s pic, then Plenty of Fish’s thorough questionnaires might be a refreshing change. Like OkCupid, you can pay for more features, but the free version of the site is really all you need.

With a free account, you can view other people’s profiles and send and receive messages as normal. An upgraded membership will let you add more than eight pictures to your profile, stand out in searches and search for others‘ usernames, starting at $38.99 (£29.77) for three months – but all the essentials are covered in the free version.

4. free dating

OK, this one does what it says on the tin: completely free profile searching and messaging, and you can view as many profiles as you like at once. The bear-magazine.com site is specific to the UK and specialises in regional dating, so you’re able to easily browse profiles based on location. Plus, they promise that it’ll stay free forever.

5. completely free dating

Another one that gets straight to the point, Completely Free Dating promises to be, well, totally free to use. You can search, view and message people without the need to upgrade – and it’s strictly a website, unlike other sites which often have an accompanying app. It’s also UK-specific, so you can quickly search based on different regions.

6. fdating

Fdating is totally free to access, and you can even browse profiles without making a profile of your own – but you’ll need to log in to send a message. Still, once you’re logged in there’s nothing to pay for and the site will remain completely free. You can specify the age range of people you’re looking to meet in your profile, and you can even see when potential dates were last active on the site, saving you from messaging dead accounts.

9. match me happy

UK-based dating site Match Me Happy lets you sign up, make a profile and send introductory messages all for free – and you can select your section of the site based on region. You can create a favourites list (like taking potential dates through to the next round of the X Factor) and send unlimited ‚winks‘ as a free member – but you’ll need to pay to keep using the instant messenger.

11. just london singles

Just London Singles is made for dating in the capital, where it’s notoriously hard to meet people who want a relationship. The site allows you to make a profile, browse others and send likes for free, but you have to upgrade to send and receive unlimited messages and see who’s viewed your profile.

Read, watch, listen

You are leaving bear-magazine.com and going to the website of our trusted provider. The provider’s terms, conditions and policies apply. Please return to bear-magazine.com to learn more about other benefits.

You’ll start receiving the latest news, benefits, events, and programs related to AARP’s mission to empower people to choose how they live as they age.

You can also manage your communication preferences by updating your account at anytime. You will be asked to register or log in.

which is the best online dating site for me?

Some free sites can be quite light-on in the details department so you have to make a dating decision almost solely on appearance (Tinder is notorious for this). Sites like eHarmony have more detailed search criteria but the paid version will yield a narrower search, giving you matches you’re more likely to be into.

Paid membership can give you greater control over your privacy settings and can weed out the weirdos and hook-up artists so you won’t be inundated with messages from people who aren’t right for you.

Sites that only let you contact members if you’ve both liked or swiped right on each other also eliminate unwanted messages

Sites like OkCupid that only let you contact members if you’ve both liked or swiped right on each other also eliminate unwanted messages. Bumble takes this one step further by only allowing women to send the first message (for heterosexual matches) to minimise the deluge of messages women invariably receive on dating sites.

For many sites, you can’t actually access pricing information until you’ve joined up, by which time you might decide it’s not worth it. To help you decide whether to part with your hard-earned cash, we’ve listed membership prices for each site below.

CHOICE Tip: If you want some control over which third-party advertisers can track your online movements and target you with ads, you can opt out of ad targeting by ad agencies who are members of the Network Advertising Initiative. Check out their website for more details.

Bumble

Who’s it for? Younger membership. Female-friendly, where women make the first move (for heterosexual matches).

Angle: designed to „disrupt traditional gender roles“, women must make the first move in sending a message for heterosexual matches. (Either person can initiate contact for same-sex matches.)

Unique features: Bumble isn’t just for dating – the app also includes Bumble BFF (for platonic friendships) and Bumble Bizz (business networking), making it a kind of Facebook/Tinder/LinkedIn hybrid.

Matching: Bumble uses your GPS location to find people in your area who fit your age criteria. If you swipe right on someone’s profile and they swipe right on yours, it’s a match and you’ll both be notified.

„The Bumble app is free and I have had the most dates with this app. It’s an easy format and given the female makes contact first, you can eliminate unwanted attention.“ – Kate*, 44.

Okcupid

Who’s it for? Detailed, math-based matching system. Good for queer, gender-diverse and non-monogamous dating.

Privacy: Your info may be shared with other dating sites like Plenty of Fish and Tinder.

We asked OkCupid for details about their membership but they were unable to provide exact numbers.

Demographic: The majority of OkCupid users are Millennials, followed by Gen Z then Gen X.

Angle: OkCupid claims to use a math-based matching system to help users find partners. After completing a basic profile and matching questions, users can elect to fill out hundreds of optional broad-reaching questions – like if they’d date a messy person, whether they like dogs, or even how often they brush their teeth. The more questions you answer on your profile, the better the matching system becomes, the company says.

Unique features: You can select which gender/s you’re interested in, and what kinds of connections – hook-ups, friendship, short- or long-term dating, and non-monogamy. OkCupid had the most gender, sexuality and relationship preferences of all the sites we looked at, so it’s a good option if you don’t identify as heterosexual, cisgender or monogamous.

Matching: Potential matches are rated by a „Match Percentage“ based on who you’re looking for, what they’re looking for, and how similarly you both answer questions that you mark as important. Users can then flick through one potential match at a time, search for users based on specific criteria including gender, age and distance or browse all potential matches using the discover feature.

Plenty of fish

Who’s it for? Uses a „Relationship Chemistry Predictor“ to find matches.

Privacy: Your profile could be made visible on other dating sites like OkCupid and Tinder.

Members: 150 million registered users worldwide. Data could not be provided on Australian members.

Matching: Users fill out a profile listing preferences for a potential partner, plus an optional „Relationship Chemistry Predictor“. PoF then sends you a report based on your survey responses and uses the data to find you matches.

Tinder

Easy-to-use app-based dating service. Uses geolocation to find matches.

App can access your Facebook profile and content of your chats.

We asked Tinder for details about their Australian membership numbers, but they could only provide a global figure of 5.7 million subscribers.

Unique features: Tinder is an app-based online dating service. It has the simplest format of all the apps and sites we looked at.

Matching: You pick the gender or genders you’re interested in, the age range you’re looking for and how close in distance you’d like a potential match to be. Tinder then uses the GPS on your mobile phone to search for nearby Tinder users. Once it locates them, it shows you their first name, age, a profile picture and brief blurb. You tap their name to read a little more about them and see more pictures, swipe right if you’d like to be matched with them, or left if you’re not interested. If both parties swipe right, you’re a match, meaning you can start interacting with them.

Finding love on facebook

Facebook Dating officially launched in the US in September 2019 and is currently available in 19 other countries, although there is currently no date set for its arrival to Australia. Users of Facebook Dating are able to create a dating profile that is separate from their Facebook profile and potential matches are recommended based on preferences, shared interests, Facebook activity and mutual friends.

You’re also able to discover other singles that share similar interests through groups or events. Your friends and family aren’t able to see what you do with your dating profile, and you can’t be matched with your friends unless you use the Secret Crush feature and you both add each other to your list.

Given how many of us use Facebook, the convenience of an embedded dating app will most likely trump users‘ concerns about privacy

Facebook Dating also allows users to share Facebook and Instagram stories and add Instagram posts to their dating profiles.

After the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook users might be understandably wary of sharing personal information in the Facebook app – especially particularly sensitive information that you might share in the course of getting to know someone. But given how many of us use Facebook, the convenience of an embedded dating app will most likely trump users‘ concerns about privacy. We’ll be watching this closely!

young gay hot men! try scruff!

Without a doubt Scruff delivers a daily feast of gay men. You can spend hours reading the profiles and viewing face photos of aspiring young gay men on your Smartphone in the privacy of your home or office. You are allowed to “woof” any man that you might fancy. This is purely your individual choice. You can even contact any of these individuals if their profile offers any interest to you. It is up to the individual you try to contact to message you back. It may be problematic as to whether you receive a message back because that is based on mutual interest of looks, hobbies, business interests and numerous other factors. These factors can be included under the very general term of “chemistry”. The basic plan is free. You are limited on the number of guys you can view. It is still very generous on the number of men you can view. For a nominal monthly fee you can upgrade to the “Pro” plan. With this plan you can view many more gay men along with their profiles as well as message any guy you might want. It is very addictive to browse the guys. It is very entertaining as well. I would highly recommend this app! If you are a gay man I guarantee you will enjoy yourself!

Our success stories

I was looking for a serious relationship when I uploaded my profile on bear-magazine.com, but I think I found my soulmate. Joseph and I met and have been dating for the last six months.

I like the ease with which I can find dates searching for a life-time partner to spend all my free time on bear-magazine.com Bromo Is the go-to of gay dating.

I am amazed at the number of local singles on bear-magazine.com I get an unlimited number of singles‘ profiles to choose from, and dating has never been easier for me.

I had nothing to do with this bear-magazine.com stuff previously. I got so many hits minutes after uploading my profile. After meeting Donald for a coffee and later dating him, I must say that Bromodates is the ultimate gay dating site in the USA.

awesome app! totally recommended!

I just want to express my great satisfaction with this app. I’ve been single for quite awhile and have tried several different dating apps. I never really had any luck. Then I would end up seeing tons of ads about Taimi. Honestly I was very skeptical to download it as I thought it was just another hook up app and I wanted something serious. So it took me several months of being haunted by the ads before I actually conceded and downloaded the app. I read several reviews before hand and how people were complaining about the subscription but I guess they did not read the fine print that the automatic renewal needs to be cancelled before the trial ends to avoid getting charged. The app was definitely free to use. It was easy to use and has the same swiping mechanics as the other apps. The only difference is you can tell the people who liked you and also it works like a social media app too with it facebook-like scheme. I am very satisfied with it because I finally able to find someone that I really like, we’ve been dating for more than a month now and recently became official too as we were hitting off really great. I’m so happy right now. Thank you to the Taimi Team. I definitely recommend this app to other people to use.

be ready to get banned for no reason

I was banned for no reason and cannot make a new account of any kind; ever, because of violating a rule that I didn’t know was a rule. To be clear, they do NOT have a valid terms of use or list or rules that clearly defines what the rules are, and among the “violations” that can get you banned for life include things like: having an only fans, simply having one, even if you don’t promote it within the app; crossdressing (which infringes upon LGBT rights of self expression and is completely unacceptable on the app developers part); and looking for a younger/older partner in a sugar daddy type of way. Other behaviors they don’t like will also get you kicked despite the fact that there is NO list of rules anywhere on the site for you to go over ahead of the ban, and you receive no advance warning. I want to know from the developers, why do you run such a hostile, hateful and non inclusive environment? You are targeting the LGBT community with hate tactics and you are showing your true colors as an enemy of the community, not an ally, and you need to answer for your wrongdoing. You don’t want us, and we don’t want you either.

so far so good

I’m enjoying this app so far and I can tell you that I have tried many apps like this and I haven’t been this satisfied. I’m getting more attention than any other app. Although I do wish they were offering a deal for the one month subscription because I’m considering a monthly subscription after my free trial ends. I would really enjoy seeing where we can change our location. Location is very important even knowing where people are that we are looking at. You can like and match all you want but isn’t it important to meet as well? Doesn’t really help if you connect with someone states away. Other than that I think this app could still keep it’s potential as long as they don’t mess up and keep their same mentality. On second thought, I just updated my review because I’m not unhappy. I cannot get this stupid app to update my location. It’s saying my current location is from when I was out of town but I live in San Diego and my location setting is on. I’m now learning the Transwomen are just as bad as the guys from the other dating sites. They talk to you then ghost you for no reason. I was chatting with one before I left for thanksgiving and all of a sudden gone. Someone else reached out then same. Guys seem to be a little better on here. I guess. Maybe. I just don’t understand how the hell you create an app that lacks the most important thing. Location!

pointless app

After using this app for maybe a month or two, I found that it’s quite useless. There’s no real way to filter out guys that you’re not interested in, and majority of the guys you may message are only trying to get sex from randoms or they just simply don’t reply. A lot of features within this app that should be quite basic they want to charge you for it… like yeah right… who in their RIGHT mind would pay to use any kind of feature of a dating/hookup service..? You can only hide/block so many people or customize certain settings within a limit before you would have to pay to do any further. I don’t necessarily recommend this app but I still don’t knock down those that are okay with it. Facebook, and other know social networks can be used for this type of stuff as well and they’re free completely! Additionally, there should be a requirement for all users to have profile photos of themselves! I really disliked it when blank profiles messaged me, and I have no clue who is messaging me because they’re fully hiding themselves. Being discreet/DL is perfectly fine, but hiding your identity and messaging people without letting them see who you are will not get you anywhere; that can be dangerous as well.

Challenge

Surge needed to succeed in a highly competitive dating app marketplace. This required the app to have perfect UX design and a robust backend with many complex features including spam detection, a dynamic photo-processing system and an array of real-time functions, like chat. Surge also needed to kick-start its distribution and monetization.

Solution

Surge designed and developed the iOS and Android platforms as well as the landing page, backend solution and administration. Users are uploading tons of photos to the site, so a special semi-automatic image processing engine was developed to help cope with the growing volume. STRV has also developed a tool for customer support, as well as a spam detection engine and real-time features such as chat with active/inactive status options based on bear-magazine.com mobile marketing department focused on growth. A combination of ad campaigns, ASO, social media influencers and other activities helped get Surge from zero to 2.5 million users. By adding new functions and improving the UX, Surge boosted its monetization from $9K to $100K a month.

Surge is a cutting-edge gay dating and social networking app with a wide-ranging community full of thousands of men looking for hookups, chats and/or long-term relationships. Surge is currently the fastest-growing gay dating app on the US market and the most searched gay dating app on the Apple App Store. The concept is easy: Swipe right to „like“ a guy and left to „pass.“ Users can start chatting with other men in the Surge community once there is a mutual connection.

only paying members can communicate

What percentage of users are paying customers? I’m going to be generous and guess 5%. Unlike some other dating sites, this one doesn’t allow ANY direct contact unless BOTH interested parties are paying members. It would be one thing if you had to pay membership dues and buy tokens to send a message to someone whose profile you like. It’s quite another to insist the recipient ALSO pay for their membership (just to receive it). For non paying members you can look and like them, but without both of you paying, there’s no means of finding out who they are. Here’s the thing. The site is rife with advertisements so you know the developers are making money from ad revenue. Why isn’t that enough? They have the most ads I’ve seen AND still do not allow chatting like the better sites (Hinge, OK Cupid, Bumble; who have less ads). The site interface is confusing, the carousel feature only shows photos (so you don’t know anything about the user except their appearance). There’s no means of skipping a profile for later (you have to ether like it or discard it) and it constantly tries to coax the user into paying AND buying some virtual currency to purchase privileges. It’s pointless. Try one of the others. They’ve wisely switched to ads as their revenue stream.

Seek through friends and relatives

Especially if they are aware of your sexual preferences, they might have already suggested to present their acquaintance who also happened to be gay. For sure, everybody wants to have freedom of choice and be able to pick a partner by himself. But why not give it a chance? Yes, there are chances you wouldn’t like each other or happen to be polar opposites. But it might not be the case and your new acquaintance could actually be the one you dreamed of. And if not, then simply spend your time well and maybe get a new friend.

But it might not be the case and your new acquaintance could actually be the one you dreamed of.

Also, meeting a partner through the people you already know prevents from having issues later. You get a possibility to instantly learn more about the date from those who already know him well enough. That means, no bad guys, no cheaters or liars. At least, you will know about it beforehand and take your own responsibility in dating them.

Don’t rely on parties

Gay dating often implies going to various clubs and parties thinking that a future partner must be awaiting there. In our opinion, this option is not even close to being a good one. Well, maybe if you need a one night stand, yes, this is your chance of getting one. But those dreaming of a future husband will not be in luck paying a visit to a gay bar.

Apart from people who don’t deserve trust, trying to find a partner through a party has other drawbacks. Such as being too stressful for many people. For instance, gay dating for introverts is full of complications by itself, and going to a nightclub, with hundreds of people dancing or drinking and loud music playing will be a whole challenge. Dating is a process one should enjoy, and there is no need to complicate it and make it unpleasant.

Dating is a process one should enjoy, and there is no need to complicate it and make it unpleasant.

Don’t let stereotypes catch you and stop inventing problems

Some people say that straight couples are the only ones with a future, other believe that only gays can build healthy relationships. Surely none of those points are true. All of us are human beings, all of us can be right and wrong. Not a single relationship will always work flawlessly, so seeing everything in black and white just provokes problems and unrealistic expectations which lead to disappointment.

Inventing problems is the perfect way to sabotage yourself and your relationship. People love to see all things in black so sincerely, that they ignore the simple and clear truth — some problems are just thin air. If you doubt yourself, underestimate your self-esteem, this feeling of insecurity will both pull down you and your future relationships. It is important to understand that life is always a road with ups and downs and it’s okay to fail. Sometimes just being gay is a huge deal, but you are who you are. All you can do is just take a deep breath and soberly assess the situation.

Don’t be desperate

Meeting gay singles, chances are you think of them as of your last chance to get a boyfriend. That happens often because other gay men in somebody’s local area are not often visible and may even have not come out of the closet. So when you finally come across one, and especially if he happens to be your type, you don’t want to let him go.

Be very respectful about coming out

For many gays it is a very serious matter, and opinions here can be very different. You can meet a person who truly believes that it is important to be open, or someone who hides his sexual orientation from family or colleagues for one reason or another. Both approaches are okay, we all can decide for ourself whether we are ready to open to the world or not. Gay community has enough pressure from the outside, so everything inside should be understanding and respectful. Discrimination is still on the social agenda, many people don’t want to talk about their sexuality at all. Surely it is necessary to overcome fear and social anxiety, and relationships and dating are a good and healthy way. Just don’t push your new mate too hard and don’t let him put pressure on you.

Be very attentive on the first date

When you see a new person for the first time in real life, you understand how different online and offline impression can be. You’re not an Oscar-winning actor so don’t play someone who is just a character or a compilation of everything that makes you still believe in humanity. This scenario has only two endings. Bad one is your possible mate sees that you are just some kind of pretender. Truly horrific one is also your possible mate believing that this is who you really are. In any case, you will just ruin everything from the start.

The best advice is to be polite, attentive and respectful. It is important not to break into someone’s personal space. Focus on hobbies and interests during the conversation. You can go into discussing previous romantic experience and plans for the future, but be careful here. First of all you need to know each other, it’s allowed to talk about family and previous dates, but only in a positive way. Try to avoid everything with negative patterns, also don’t go into politics, religion, ecology and all that sort of discussions. They can ruin an easy-going tone. Perfect timing for the first date is about 2 hours. It is just enough time to get a strong impression and not feel confused.

Try to share some good memories, speak about some of your trips or interesting places where you’ve been to. Talking about experience helps people to imagine what kind of things they can do together. First date is important, often it becomes some pre-recorded reflection of future relationships. Be confident and don’t consider the first date as a big deal, and everything will go just fine.

the bottom line

Finding your soulmate is worth every penny, but do you really need to use a paid site to find a real relationship? Does a monthly fee really weed out people who aren’t taking the process seriously?

This wasn’t really an issue before 2012, but the Tinder-led surge of 30-second profiles and instant access to all single folks within 10 miles gave sites with tedious personality analyses and upscale subscriptions a run for their money — literally.

Vox said what we’re all really thinking: „At what point in the completely nightmarish process of online dating does one decide that it’s worth spending money on making that experience slightly less terrible?“

The bottom line

Online dating is hard, y’all — but so is dating in person. Basically, dating is just the worst, which is why we’re always trying to save you time by ranking the best online dating sites in general, the best dating apps for college studentsbest sexting apps for those who just want to „date“ from home. Dating bear-magazine.com you find someone you truly vibe with, that is. Then dating is *the best.*

If you’re not sure about which dating site you should sign up for (AKA spend money on) or which app to download, testing them out for free first is a great idea. But for some dating apps and sites, the free version may actually be all you need.

At some point you’ve probably considered registering for a dating site — that is, until you see the subscription prices and decide that maybe it’s cheaper to just sip a beer at a bar. Sorry, eharmony, but some of us don’t have the funds to spend $40 per month on finding a significant other. We got bills, yo.

maybe you want to test the waters of online dating without investing a lot. The expensive sites do offer free trials, but seven days isn’t enough time to find someone. What you need is a free dating site that gives you a full array of options and that isn’t a total scam. You want to be able to actually message and match with the people you see on the apps.

We did the research for you and have compiled a comprehensive list of the best free dating apps and sites, and will give you the lowdown on what type of person each one is best suited for. (And if you land a hot date out of this, we expect a thank you.)

These aren’t like Matcheharmony where you need to pay to do basically anything.

OkCupid is a seriously hip LGBTQ-friendly app that has won the hearts of millennial and mature singles alike. I’ve said this a million times before and I’ll say it again: OkCupid’s advertising is outstanding. They deserve endless applause just for that, but I realize many people on dating apps care about more than aesthetics. Good thing OkCupid is so much more than that, taking compatibility factors into account that other sites haven’t even thought of.

This is the place for, well, pretty much everyone who takes dating seriously, but still wants to have fun. Though OkCupid’s advertisements may have „DTF“ plastered all over them, the site’s intentions and matchmaking process are no joke. We also want to mention that OkCupid and its user base is pretty liberal. The ads with same-sex couples are an obvious giveaway, but OkCupid has snuck in other little features to weed out more conservative-minded people. For instance, they’ll ask questions about whether you’re for or against the defunding of Planned Parenthood or same-sex marriage, and if you feel obligated to help fellow human beings — all as a way to tell right off the bat if your potential match leans left or right. (This can help you avoid awkward date conversations in the future.) Liberal ladies found that this worked to their advantage, as OkCupid released statistics showing that liberal-leaning answers to those questions made you significantly more likely (like 80% plus more likely) to find love on the site.

It might take some time and genuine effort to make a profile, but that’s what you want if you’re looking for something real. You’ll fill out a questionnaire with your answers as well as what you would like your ideal match to answer. This makes the application-building process a lot more fun than other apps, making it feel like an online quiz. It asks a range of questions, from simple stuff to if you smoke and drink to more intimate things like how many dates you typically wait before sleeping with someone. Pro tip: The app says the more questions you answer, the better your matches will be. The deeper you go, the more accurate your profile is — and in turn, OkCupid will have a way easier time finding matches for you.

While building your profile can be fun, it can get tedious — so it’s probably no surprise that this isn’t the site to use if you’re looking for something quick and casual. Also, though OkCupid has a super sturdy user base (around 30 million users), variety of results won’t be nearly as good if you’re not in a populated area. For city dwellers, this is fine, but singles in smaller towns may want to opt for a different app.

OkCupid is the perfect happy medium for people who don’t want anything to do with trendy swiping apps, but who also don’t want to feel like they’re desperately looking for marriage. OkCupid genuinely wants dating to be a good experience for you, and their multi-faceted matchmaking and modern vibe help you steer clear of feeling like a loser talking to people online.

Hinge gives the modern feel and no-patience-required matching like Tinder, but with the relationship (rather than hookup) mindset that sites like Match offer. Pretty much everyone is on the same page and knows that that this app isn’t for sex, but there’s no pressure to rush into marriage either. It’s chill, it’s legit, and traditional swiping apps should be worried.

Hinge is the place for people who want a real relationship but don’t want to commit to a full-fledged dating site with extensive questionnaires. Hinge calls itself the app „designed to be deleted“ because you’re meant to find a relationship so you can stop using dating apps.

While Hinge first started by showing you Facebook friends of friends, their algorithm has been getting smarter and smarter, and is now able to surpass friends of friends as a predictor of compatibility. This means you won’t be matched with someone all wrong for you simply because you know the same person. Rather, Hinge will help you get to know the other person more deeply by having users answer prompts to show off personality and interests.

Hinge only lets you send 10 likes per day, which is a slight bummer. But it means you have to be a little more selective and thoughtful about who you like, which is more conducive to finding a compatible relationship. Hinge isn’t meant for constant swiping — and everyone I know who uses Hinge (including myself) has never felt the need to upgrade past the free version. Having endless potential matches is overwhelming, and if you’re trying to find someone you genuinely connect with, there’s no point to viciously rushing through every person in a 50 mile radius.

We love Hinge. It’s a step up from hookup apps but the perfect level of serious for 20 and 30 somethings who want something real, but don’t need anyone asking how many kids they want just yet.

well to leave it off the list. It has its obvious negatives, but the user friendliness, instant connecting, and massive potential match pool make it most people’s first download choice when they need a quick hook up or confidence-boosting attention. Though it’s technically in the „dating app“ category, I’m not so sure that everyone’s intentions on the app are to find a serious relationship — but it’s definitely possible. Whether you love it or think it’s trash, it’s going to be one of the best for the foreseeable future, and those are just #facts.

Tinder is place you go to find someone to flirt with ASAP. Everyone and their mother is on Tinder, and the wide variety of people means you’ll never not be able to find someone close. Tinder is great for finding a quick hookup with someone nearby where you live, and it’s especially handy if you’re looking for a vacation fling or a local to show you around while you’re traveling. It’s pretty much online dating without the commitment: You can use it when you’re bored, ignore it for three weeks, and come back to find new matches and a new crowd to swipe through.

This isn’t to say that Tinder is only used for finding a one night stand or friends with benefits situation, though. A lot of people are truly on Tinder to find a real relationship, and it’s likely that you know at least one couple that met on Tinder (if you don’t, just look at these mushy Tinder success stories).

Because you’re making your swipe decision based on someone’s photos and a tiny bio that’s usually just a quote, Tinder gets a lot of shit for being superficial. But let’s be honest with ourselves, guys — photos are still the first thing we’d notice on any dating site, even the ones that are supposed to be super deep and connection oriented. And if you’re only looking for a casual encounter, this speedy, no-frills process is exactly what you want.

in the age range and distance radius that you set.

There’s a disadvantage to the whole swiping-based-on-photos thing, too: Because true matchmaking is nonexistent, that face of that hottie who you matched with might be the only thing you like about them. Matching based solely on physical attraction is just asking for awkward conversations, horrendous disagreements, and unsolicited dick pics down the road. You’ll be lucky if you avoid being messaged something totally raunchy and uninvited, but users are nice humans and will state their intentions in their bios.

Say what you want about Tinder, but it gets the job done. Everyone shits on the shallow matching, but that fast-paced action is exactly what many young people want. If it didn’t work to some extent, Tinder’s user base would have gone downhill a long time ago. Each time you open Tinder it’s a complete toss up, meaning your next match could be your future spouse — or it might just be some rando asking if you’re DTF. Love is a gamble, after all.

If you combined Tinder and Hinge, then gave women most of the control, you’d get Bumble. You create a profile with a bio and personal traits, and you’re even able to include what you’re looking for in your profile, so people will know straight up whether you’re looking for a relationship or something casual.

Bumble is a classic like and match sort of dating app, but there are a couple catches. In heterosexual pairings, women have to make the first move and each person only has 24 hours to respond once the match has been made. (In same-sex couples, either person can initiate the conversation.)

Because women have most of the control, Bumble is ideal for women who are sick of unsolicited messages from creepy dudes and for men who are tired of always having to make the first move. It’s also for people who want transparency in what kinds of relationships potential matches are looking for.

You have to be fast and active if you use Bumble as matches disappear after 24 hours if you don’t interact with them. This is especially rough for men seeking women, because they can’t even start the convo if the match is cutting it close to time.

Bumble has a great free version that lets you be explicit about what you’re looking for. It’s ideal for women who like to make the first move, and it sits right in that sweet spot of not a hookup app but not a marriage app either.

Grindr is the world’s biggest social networking app for gay, bi, trans, and queer people, helping singles get it on since 2009. Because there aren’t a ton of women on it, it’s usually known as the app for gay men — and at 3.6 million daily users, you could say it’s hella popular. Though it’s kind of pegged as a hookup app, finding a lasting relationship on here isn’t impossible by any means. Just keep in mind that many users you’ll come across aren’t looking for anything serious.

This is the place for gay people who can’t stand the heteronormativity of apps like Tinder or Bumble, and is especially handy for those looking for a friends with benefits situation. Grindr users have no chill. It’s gay paradise, y’all, and if you’ve been thinking that you’ve met every gay man in your area already, Grindr might be able to show you some newbies who you never knew existed. (Unless you’re in a small town, then you’ll probably see the same people recycled on your feed — but just wait until you go on vacation.)

Instead of swiping right or left to match, you’ll get a borderline infinite collage of people who are close location wise, and honestly, it’s super jumbled and scary to look at. It can be a pretty speedy process if you want it to be, and most users just looking to hook up will let you know right off that they’re not trying to make small talk. That’s not to say it’s not for relationships — one of my good friends met his current boyfriend on Grindr — but at the surface level, it’s ideal for quick, casual encounters.

Grindr does promote the importance of practicing safe sex and and has initiatives to work toward a safe, just, and inclusive world for all sexualities and gender identities. So, the app does a little more than just help you find someone hot to hook up with.

Grindr is NSFW. Messages will be freaky AF, and you’re 100% going to receive a ton of unsolicited (or solicited, if you asked) dick pics, so messaging on Grindr while you’re on the train or in line at the store isn’t quite as casual as other dating apps might be. You’re also going to get badgered for pictures as well, so if you’re uncomfortable with that, steer clear for a while.

Grindr is hookup heavy. It’s nice that most users are honest about their intentions (AKA no feelings mixups), but people looking for a serious relationship might get discouraged. We’re not quite saying this a downside, because for those who strictly want to hook up, this is heaven. It’s just something to keep in mind.

If you’re a gay man, an app that’s specifically for you is your place to shine. There are obviously gay men on Tinder, Hinge, and many other dating apps, but that’s probably their backup app, and you’re likely to circle through the same batch. No one wastes time on here, and if you’re in the mood and looking for someone ASAP, Grindr won’t steer you wrong. Just don’t expect to meet your date’s parents any time soon.

a lesbian site aimed at a male fantasy — and they’ll help you widen your dating pool beyond the circles you already know IRL.

This is the place for queer, bisexual, trans, and lesbian women to go when they’re so over men pretending to be women online or if they’re tired of being asked for a threesome by straight couples. The fact that it’s made by queer women for queer women was a much-needed addition to the online dating world, and knowing that it’s a safe space is really nice. This is due to the fact that HER requires a Facebook account to register, which does a pretty good job at solving one of the main issues that comes along with online dating as a lesbian: Desperate men posing as women, attempting to bear-magazine.com, as much as they can, and being all around creepy and invasive. Another refreshing aspect is that HER goes way past being a hookup app — that is, without adding pressure to find a romantic partner. While it can be used to couple up and find local matches that you never knew existed, you can also get involved in local LGBTQ events, read LGBTQ news, and make friends through its social-media like feed.

Tinder’s heteronormativity and unbeatable amount of users.

The number of users might not compare to other apps just yet, but HER is making serious strides toward becoming a total boss of an app (and toward taking a ton of queer lady users away from Tinder). The low-pressure atmosphere is super inviting, and the fact that you can do anything from find a girlfriend to find friends to attend an LGBTQ movie night makes it unique for multiple reasons. It just rocks, OK?

Though it’s not the most attractive setup, Plenty of Fish is an underrated choice for people just dipping their toes into the world of online dating. As a tried and true option that’s been around for over 15 years, the 35+ crowd might be more familiar with Plenty of Fish than they would be with newer apps. The advertising, lengthy questionnaires, and profiles are extremely traditional, making this a safe bet for non-millennials, divorcees, and single parents who are not in the mood to mess around. Plenty of Fish is part of the Match group, so you know they mean business with their algorithm.

This is the place where the older crowd can avoid the non-serious people and find other singles their age. Chemistry is the name of the game here, and the multiple questionnaires are no joke. This isn’t a quick five-second set up like other apps, but that’s only because Plenty of Fish truly wants you to dig deep so that they can give you the best quality matches. Not only does POF attempt to match you with people who you’ll statistically get along with (based on how you’ve both answered questions), but it also wants to match you with people who are looking for the same thing as you.

In the „meeting goals“ section, you’ll specify whether you’re looking for something long term, looking to date but nothing serious, etc., and then Plenty of Fish will try to match you with others who answered similarly. The idea is to eliminate the awkward „What are we?“ conversations set you up for success by pairing you with people who share your priorities. It feels like the site is geared toward people who have been unlucky with love in the past, which offers a sliver of hope to those who claim to be „forever alone.“ POF doesn’t take all the fun away, though — you’ll still get to swipe and have a fun and mysterious bio, aiming for serious connections without the serious feel.

The user interface is not the most attractive we’ve ever seen, but considering POF has such a large amount of users, I guess we can ignore the subpar aesthetics. Since the profile building takes some time, we’d suggest answering all of the questions on a desktop, but doing the actual swiping and matching on the app.

While POF used to be pretty binary, the platform has moved toward more inclusivity and offers multiple gender options.

POF offers a large variety of potential mates. Regardless of whether you’re super picky with your type or have no idea what you want, there’s pretty much no way you won’t find a few people who you find interesting. If you’re only looking to hook up, definitely stay away from POF — but if you’re looking to settle down, POF’s matchmaking has got your back.

The bottom line

Dating when you’re 40 or older can be intimidating — unlike when you’re in your 20s or 30s, you can’t just assume everyone your age is single and looking for love. If you’re back in the game, it’s important to remember that around half of marriages end in divorce, so the dating pool might not be as small as you might think.

Meeting people in real life still happens, but sometimes it’s easier and less intimidating to meet people online. There’s a comfort in knowing that the people you find on dating apps are single and looking for a romantic relationship, so at least you’re both on the same page from the start.

What we’re trying to say is that there is nothing to fear about dating again at 40.

6. facebook dating

With Facebook Dating, you needn’t worry that all of your friends will see you looking for love. Facebook Dating doesn’t display on your personal Facebook page, and you create an entirely separate profile for the dating experience. But to make things easier, the platform mocks up a suggested profile by pulling photos and information from your personal page and highlights users who have groups and events in common with your own. Like Bumble, when you like someone, you’re matched if they like you back, but there’s no swiping involved. Just tap the “heart,” or the “X” button if you want to skip someone. Once you’re matched you’ll be notified, and either person can send the first message. Be aware that Facebook Dating is only offered through the app, and has no desktop version. And keep in mind that Facebook Dating may appeal to older daters more than some other apps, since 37 percent of Facebook users are over 45, according to consumer data company Statista. For now at least, Facebook Dating is free and doesn’t have ads, either.

Facebook also offers interest-based dating groups (Jordy has joined several, including one for vegetarians and another for mindful living). Other dating groups on Facebook include those for people who are recently divorcedother singles in their 50s, 60s and 70s. Users can join these dating groups for free using their personal Facebook profiles and post, comment and interact.

By signing up, users agree that all profile information is public – including photos – and so automatically grant an irrevocable and ongoing licence for the company to use and distribute any information posted or transmitted on the site. In effect, this means users‘ photos, aliases and other personal details can be used in advertising, online and off, although it’s possible to opt out of this by updating privacy options in the account settings portal on the website.

OkCupid is part of Match Group, which owns other dating sites like Tinder, Plenty of Fish and Match, and your information may be shared with other Match Group companies. OkCupid may also share your information with third parties such as advertising partners. Tinder and OkCupid have recently come under fire following the release of a report by the Norwegian Consumer Council which found that the apps were sharing personal user information with third parties.

If you sign up to Zoosk and give the site access to one of your social media profiles, such as Twitter or Facebook, they may make posts on your behalf on that platform, and they may also gather information about your friends.

Think twice about giving Zoosk access to your address book – they keep your contacts on file and may later use your information to suggest friends and connections to other members. If they invite your friends, they may out you as being a Zoosk user by extending the invitation on your behalf. (While there’s no shame in dating online, you might not want it advertised to your nearest and dearest.) By signing up to Zoosk, you grant permission for all your user content to be used for purposes including advertising or transmission to a third party.

Zoosk was reportedly the first major dating site to offer photo verification. All photos are reviewed by moderators: users can verify their profile pictures by taking a video selfie that moderators compare with your profile picture to make sure it really looks like you. You can tell which pictures have been verified as they’ll have a green tick. A Zoosk representative told us that verified photos get up to 200% more views and 100% more messages than the average.

Verdict: „I think they are actually a brilliant way to meet and connect with people you wouldn’t usually. It’s great to keep chatting on the app [or site] until you’re sure of a connection and then you can transfer to [phone] and then in person.“

Recommendations: „I find Tinder is the easiest site to use but you do have to dig further to find quality. I have also had success with Bumble and Happn. When I started online dating I used RSVP and found it good at the time, but Tinder just made it all so much easier and faster – which has good and bad points.“

Victoria, an online marketer, says she is „quite fussy“ but has persevered and says it’s possible to find quality matches online – and she’s now able to identify them quickly.

„It’s probably important to note that I don’t get overly worried about my privacy online as I’m an online marketer!“ she says.

„I definitely think there are scammers on there, but these are fairly easy to spot. I was contacted by one and Googled the first name and who they said they worked for, and quickly found an attached fake Facebook profile (which you can tell by no interaction and just a few photos). You can also do a Google reverse image search on any images and it shows you where these show up elsewhere online. Always flag [scam] profiles to the site admin – these options are easy to find.“

Verdict: „It’s a great way to meet people outside your social circle.“

Recommendations: „Free sites can be messy to deal with. I think RSVP has a level of credibility because you have to pay and there are more processes and checks in place. People are more serious about dating on RSVP, whereas other sites are more about hook-ups.“

Isabelle* met her partner on RSVP six months after she joined. Her partner had been on there for a year and was just about to give up because he thought it wasn’t working. Fortunately, they met just before he planned to deactivate his account.

„We live in different parts of Sydney and lead different lifestyles – our paths would never have crossed in the real world. But that’s a good thing, I think – it helps you meet people from outside your bubble,“ says Isabelle*.

User: emma, 39.

Sites used: Tinder, Plenty of Fish, OkCupid, RSVP, eHarmony.

Recommendations: „OkCupid was the best for meeting like-minded people. Tinder was the best for sheer random volume.“

Emma, a writer, met her husband Anthony, an electrician, via Tinder. They married in 2016 and now have a toddler and a dog. Anthony’s two daughters also live with them part-time. Emma had been dating online for a few years before they met; Anthony, a couple of months.

„I would never have met Anthony without the assistance of internet dating because we would never have crossed paths,“ she says.

Watch out for online dating scams

According to Scamwatch, almost 90% of scam reports relating to dating and romance occurred through the internet or mobile apps. In 2019 alone, Australians lost almost $27 million to dating scams – although it could be even more as many people are too embarrassed to report losses.

The ACCC reports that they received 3640 complaints about dating and romance scams in 2019, with women losing more than twice as much money as men. People aged 45+ are the most likely to be targeted.

Social media is where many people get stung, with $9.2 million in losses attributed to dating and romance scams conducted via social media – an increase of over 20% compared to 2016.

Popular scams include convincing users to part with their personal details or money, which is often sent overseas and is unrecoverable.

„Scammers go to great lengths to gain your trust, spending months and even years building a relationship with you. Once your defences are lowered, they spin an elaborate tale about how they need your financial help with a crisis, such as being ill or stranded, and ask for money,“ says ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard.

„These scams can also pose a risk to your personal safety, as scammers are often part of international criminal networks. Scammers have lured unwitting Australian victims overseas, putting people in dangerous situations that can have tragic consequences.“

1. You’ve never met or seen them: scammers will say anything to avoid a face-to-face meeting. Someone who contacts you from overseas is more likely to be a scammer, even if they say they’re just travelling for work.

2. They’re not who they appear to be: scammers steal photos and profiles from real people to create an appealing facade. Run a Google image search on photos, and search words in their description to check if they’re the real deal.

3. You don’t know a lot about them: scammers are keen to get to know you as much as possible, but are less forthcoming about themselves.

4. They ask you for money: once the connection’s been made – be it as a friend, admirer or business partner – scammers will ask you to transfer money. Don’t fall for a tall tale, no matter how plausible it sounds.
